It is stuff like this that gives truckers a bad rap...this happened this morning on I-85.....tractor trailer hit 5? motorcycles.....1 dead and 5 in critical condition.....FM and I were talking about this and going over all the different conditions that could have caused it...well until I found the article that says they were parked on the side of the road taking a break....I'll let ya'll know who the truck was when I find out..

depending on time of day (or night) the driver could have been in a nano/micro sleep, sideswiped it, woke up a bit later. even during daylight hours, if someone is tired enough, nano/micro sleeps can happen.

I am sure the DOT will crawl into the logs, etc, etc.

We should wait for more info. Recently I passed some people standing in the road , yes in the road when they had their 3 vehicles over on the shoulder. Lunacy runs amuck on the roads today. I Ride, but some "Riders" severely lack training. Everybody can and does make mistakes, lets wait for info.

No but I am glad it was bent. Gave me a little more room. I did get my ear tickled by that tree straight in my open window.

Not forgiving the driver for hitting those bikes but those guys do some stupid things sometimes. Had to lock my brakes up once where NC 311 merges off I 40 E in Winston Salem. Leader of a pack of about 12 cut me off and pulled on the shoulder right at the onramp so his group wouldn't miss the exit. Nothing like 6 bikes stopping in the road in front of you.

    This is from Timewarner news....

GREENSBORO—A fatal wreck between a tractor-trailer and a group of motorcycles is under investigation by NC Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened on the southbound side of Interstate-85 Friday around 6:45 a.m.

Troopers say this is one of the worst accidents they have ever seen. One person is dead and five are in critical condition. The cause of the wreck is still under investigation.

"[We need] more photographs. I've got to speak with the driver see if there was any impairment and then charges from there,” said Ethan Holt, NC Highway Patrol.

The tractor-trailer that hit the motorcyclists continued down the highway about three-quarters of a mile before coming to a stop near the Groometown Road exit.

Pieces of metal, clothing and tires were strewn about a stretch of grass along the highway .

"What we know right now from witnesses is that a tractor-trailer left the road and hit six motorcyclists sitting on the side of the road, evidently taking a break,” said Holt.

Troopers say the motorcyclists were from Virginia. Witnesses told them the riders were off of their bikes when the wreck happened.

Troopers say it's a dangerous place to stop.

"Pull off on an exit, park at a gas station. You're already at a disadvantage because you don't have any sheet metal around you when you're out in the wide open, standing on the shoulder of an interstate,” said Holt.

As of right now, the driver hasn't been charged. If impairment was involved, troopers say the driver could face murder charges. If not, misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle is possible.

I can't imagine why a group of bikes would park on the side of the road in the dark....but then again I use common sense far too much to figure these morons out. Too many places around there they could have just exited the highway for a break but there's that pesky common sense again ####ing things up for everyone.
