I have a 2001 western star and the gauges in the dash stopped working.

    I hate dealers take your money and then say we cant figure it out so too bad pay us. If your data Star still isn't working then you're still not getting a data bus feed. The data star and the gauges you're talking about are fed from that data bus feed from your ECM so it makes sense that if that isn't getting information your gauges aren't working.

    So now I'm going back to this post. I guess I need you to elaborate on this one. When he had the scanner plugged in inside the truck, could he see the engine info such as rpm oil pressure those kind of things like the gauges you were missing? I'm going to need a lot more info about this plugin session. Also is there any chance you can get a list of detailed information about what you paid the dealer to do nothing for you? Is there any way they can tell you what they tested what they didn't test what they found out, you know, all the details, or are you just Sol?

    When the scanner was connected all engine data was showing oil pressure tack, all engine functions, at the dealer they started throwing parts at it like a new speedo head and the data star which didn't fix any thing [ I made them remove all the parts ] they ran the wiring checked and cleaned all grounds fixed a bad connection in the left a pillar for the cab markers (which never had any issue). The notes say the signal coming to the data star was scrambled but unable to locate problem. I will get the print out and let you know.

    Just out of curiosity, do the gauges sweep when you turn the key on?

    Well after a week of continuity testing every wire in the dash from gauges to fuse panel, RF box, control box, and data star with no luck I pulled the plug on the ECM to check and test its wiring. I was pulling the harness out of the frame rail and a wire in the harness stretched like it wasn't connected. I traced the wire and continuity tested the wire and found no problem so I was puzzled about the stretch and pulled that wire and it broke in half inside the sheathing. Repaired the wire and reconnected the ECM turned the key and every gauge is working. I don't understand how it tested ok but was broken inside but the same wire would send a signal to the OBD plug and give the scanner a signal but not send it to the control box, RF box , or data star. At this point it doesn't matter because it works. I thank everyone for their input especially CETANE+ your knowledge was greatly appreciated.

    A perfect example why one should never rely on continuity testing... The thinnest wire in the world would pass a continuity test, but it would never be able to carry a load to energize the instruments.
