Never fully investigated the kingpin permit as it's not needed for my setup. But with 40k lb (+10%) allowed on a tandem set, seems closing up would do the trick anyhow under most circumstances..

I'm still around! I'm done with the fire dept, just burning up some accrued time off. I officially retire Oct 1st. I've lurked around from time to time on here, just didn't really engage much. We spent the last year or so closing out my late FIL's farm estate and getting all of that stuff in order.
We shut down the weld shop and trailer repair shop, so we can focus on traveling, spending time with our grandsons along with 30 years of my own projects that kept getting put on the back burner.
