Hi everyone...
I am trying to decide which school/training program to go to and I have a question. If I go to a program that is in a different state than my current drivers license, does that mean that I get a CDL from that state? Wouldn't I need to have an address in the CDL state? I know this might be a really dumb question but I would appreciate any help.
I have a licensing question that I can't find the answer to...

Well you can go to school anywhere but you would have to pass your current states CDL testing in order to be licensed in said state. You do have to prove residency.
dumbolnd Thanks this. -

I went to Truck Driving School in Indiana and used the school's address as proof of residency and then got Indiana CDL and then had to transfer back to home state after passed test and finished school. If you attend school out of state they have residency set up for the students to get CDL in that state and then transfer back to your home state.

This post may shed some light on what you need to know.
Attending out of State Schools and getting your CDL's
Also realize that some states, such as Illinois, have very tight restriction on testing. I don't believe they will transfer a CDL from any other state, without retesting everything (like you never had a CDL).
luvtotruck and dumbolnd Thank this. -
Ill is the only state that doesn't transfer because they have had so much fraud in there own state from licenses being sold that they are distrusting of everyone.
KW Cajun Thanks this. -
Most probably yes you will. When I started off driving, I went to the CR England school in UT and they arranged for me to get my CDL there, even though i lived in FL at the time. Once I completed the course I switched to my FL CDL.
good luck -
KW Cajun,
Thank you!! I couldn't find the right combination of key words to get anything to come up in a search. -
