I'm a new member looking for some words of wisdom. I'm currently employed at one of the largest privately-held waste haulers in the country. I haul a mix of B and A class roll off, lugger, have a good knowledge of hydraulics, etc and make 20.90 per hour. I am no stanger to working in all weather conditions (i live and work in upstate ny.)I'm home every day. I have a decent 401k that matches 50 cents to every dollar. My benefits are good but only because im single, dependent insurance is about $100 a week. I recently have an opportunity to work for cassens. I have gone through preliminary interviews. My only reservations are home time and layoffs. Do the layoffs operate like any other union? I have union carpenters and operators in my family, when they get laid off they go on unemployment or get put into the pool for other jobs. Someone else said that you will be away from home 3 nights a week, but the dispatcher told me no one really works weekends, so that doesn't add up. I have to see the terminal manager and i do have a list of questions, but there are concerns that only drivers will be able to understand and address. I gave up an otr job with mr.england because of the home time and poor pay. I have read other posts on here already but was looking for more info. Thanks all!!

First off welcome to the forum.

I can't tell you about what you benefits would be since your in NY and I believe that's a whole different contract. But if there like mine they will be less than what your paying now.

As for layoffs if you get laid off after your 30 days are in you have to opportunity to article 5 to any terminal that is currently needing help. Layoffs are not as often as most people will make you think if at all. I've been here almost a year and only been laid off for 4 days during a plant shut down. I could have articled 5'd but choose not to.

Once your 30 days are in they cannot force you to work more than 4 days a week (pending your contract). Your health and welfare are only paid for 4 days a week. I do generally work 6 but the 6th day is just loading.

I get home at least once during the week if not more. It's up to me most the time. You just have to pick your loads accordingly.

Be sure you ask any questions you need answered during your interviews. If they do yours like mine you'll have 2 then they'll give you a start date for training.

From what i understand, the yard i'd be at is one of the only mixed use yards around. cars from canada to here and are delivered around. they just got a contract for connecticut and surrounding for toyota and need drivers. i talked to dispatch and they said friday is load and park as long as you're in the yard but i'd assume the "new guy" doesn't make it back till friday night and has to work that saturday. Being home only one day a week would be a big change for me and my family so i have a lot to think about. i also don't really understand the health and welfare as you explained it but if it's not always the same from place to place i'll ask the local terminal. thanks for your experience.

Go for it. I spent 25 years with E & L ( now gone under). It was the best job I ever had. I'm now retired and draw a very nice pension. I know the plan has changed but the benefits are still great. Cassens was always a good and fair company, one of the few companies that have the owners name on the door. I knew Alan Cassens from dealing with him in Union panels and so forth. He was always a good man. During the time span that some of the Union carriers were filing bankruptcy and trying to get out of the contract Cassens and Jack Cooper were the only carriers that did not, I given both of them a lot of credit for being standup companies. Not like the bunch of ### holes that bought out E & L, Penski and Hadley. They came in and raped and pillaged the company, stole the profits and went under.

The "new guy" deal won't keep you from loading and parking on Friday.

Also the 1-2 days are during the week. I get home every weekend for at least a day and a half. But I live an hour and a half from my terminal. You can be home more if you live closer.

Yup, Cassens is a stand up operation. Go for it. Oh, FYI, Mr. Zuckerman had a hand in the demise of PTS too. It was not just the bloodsucking holding company alone that put them under.

I retired from E & L in 2001 so I missed all that crap, just know when I left it went down hill very fast.
