I use them on anything that isn't really smooth. I messed up some straps on railroad ties, because I thought they were smooth enough.

My guess is that guy isn't buying his own straps, and he doesn't want to feel alone in his laziness.

It's been said to treat straps as disposable, so you don't put their care above securement, and I agree with that. But nothing wrong with taking care of your equipment!

Not strictly speaking neccessary, the 2 reasons for edge protecting crane mats would normally be if they arent snug across or the edge is a 90 degree cut.

If i picked em up from the mill, and they were tight to each other, i doubt i would bother because they cut em pretty wet and even a sharp looking edge on wet wood wont really abrade the strap.

Used mats will be drier and you will get splinters in your straps, but the edges will be softer from use.

Its more a soft skill of figuring out the cost/benefit analysis of when to use em and when not.

So no i probably wouldnt have, but its your equipment, your right and privilege to protect your stuff.

Alternatively you could just sling chains over them.

If that’s not it. Next step is to trace the wires from the abs light all the way to the front of the trailer. And look for a short/broken wire, etc

Ya , but it’s true just because it’s new doesn’t mean everything is right on the trailer or truck….
