Were it me, that's what I would do. I'm a bit older, and Flatbed is harder work on an older guy that's never really learned before, but I've done a few winters, hauling Jersey Barriers and such, for a private carrier. There's a lot of work in securement, but the exercise, the challenge, and the triumphy, especially for a Younger Guy (as probably yourself,) is usually a better pay-off. Look at some of the heavy-haul guys on here.... TripleSix, Cnsper, passingthru69, johndeere, etc.... they didn't get there from driving van or reefer.

Seriously man, I've got around 20 years in the industry. Were those my 2 choices, I'd suck it up (actually opportunize the issue) and go BACK to Western, FlatBed. Hands down.

So many hassles with reefer.....read on about it....many threads. Sure, TransAm has DirectTV, ya know why? You're gonna need it, as often as you'll be sitting. I've never driven for either company, but this is just my insight from having been around the industry for awhile.

Best of luck, whichever way you go.

Hands DOWN. I would. The opportunities in flats is MUCH broader....... were I not hauling tanks currently, I'd suck it up and learn flats, even WITH my old arse. Yep.

Avoid reefers unless you love sitting twiddling your thumbs... I'm trying to get into flat bed myself.

Read some threads and look at some of the pix from the list of guys I mentioned, and I know I'm missing many. They are like their "own" fraternity / brotherhood. Both here, AND on the road.

You're the perfect age, man. Half (more than!) mine. Were you my son, I'd give you a good swift kick in the arse to go THAT route! Keep researching around here; best wishes!

LOVE skateboarding most of the time you run out of duty hours before driving hours. So what if you work your but off for three hours a day. More miles and steadier just BE SURE all miles pay the same a good flatbed company they will. kitty power

I'll go back to Afghanistan or Iraq then ever work a van again. If you ever go to a truckstop look at the guys that work van, then look at the guys that work flatbed. Who is wearing flip-flops or struggles to get in and out of their truck without being winded. Generally, flatbed'ers have a little bit more class. The guy that opens his door at the truckstop and pees off onto the pavement more than likely isn't the same guy that will secure his load then tarp through sleet!

Unless something unusual is going on you may not be limited to just those two companies.
