I work for a small (50 to 60 trucks), family-owned company. I've been employed there for more than a year. I love my job. In August 2015 my boss purchased a brand new Mack Granite truck for me to drive. He had it fitted with a brand new dump bed. I'm considering asking him for a lease-to-own agreement, but I have a lot of questions I need answered first.

The "Lease" forum doesn't seem appropriate because it mostly addresses questions about lease-to-own from large companies that don't care about their people. My situation is a lot different. That leaves "Ask An Owner-Operator", "Experienced Truckers Advise", or "trucker Taxes and Financing". Which is the most appropriate forum?

    Thanks!

  3. Experienced truckers advice would be my suggestion.

How well do you know the owner?

I know him pretty well. His wife, too. Like I said, its a small family operation. He's a stand up guy with loads of integrity. I know many of our drivers have done lease to owns with him. They all were able to own their trucks outright within 3 to 5 years. There are a few that asked for lease-to-own that he turned down for various reasons.Btw, my projected timeline for this is to enter into the contract around May or June 2016. I wouldn't do it now because work is slow when it rains.

Here's a few details. I'm not going to ask all my questions at once because the questions build on the answers I receive.

The truck is a 2015 Mack Granite. I named it Thumper. Thumper cost $130,000 brand new back in August 2015. The boss got a discount because he had just purchased 35 Mack Pinnacles. I love the truck, but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that were available. I think the boss knew I might want to buy it from him. He was trying to keep the cost down. The warranty is good for 5 years. The payments are around $2000 a month. The truck is paid $85 an hour and typically burns $350 to $700 gallons of fuel a week. The truck's gross earnings fluctuate between 10,000 and 16,000 per month. I'll have more exact numbers after I enter the full years numbers into a spreadsheet in January.

Another important piece of information is how much do you make now just as a driver?

Let's just leave it here so that you can get advice from the O/O's to help you make the decision. They can look at your plan and help you fine tune it so that you can be profitable.
