I've learned quick that the big boy brokerages don't pay as well as all the mom and pop shops b/c they don't NEED me, they have 5 calls waiting on hold for the same load they're talking to me about.

    Thats not always true.

I've gotten some well paying loads through Mercer, Landstar and CRST Malone.

I'm pretty much a nobody in their world,.. yet I've managed to get lucky more then a few times.

I think using positive social tactics when talking with brokers works well. You get more bees with honey sort of thing. Allowing them to understand I'm out here trying to make a living just like they are. Make small talk when the moment is workable. Otherwise just keep it simple and to the point.

Often I have brokers who remember me and ask how I'm doing. In a world where you are rarely more then an invoice #, its good to build potential business avenues, even when its not always someone you like talking with. I get some of my better paying partials using this tactic. And lately I've actually had a couple brokers call me directly asking where I am and if I'll be in a certain area.

I think reputation plays a large roll in this business. If you can score some brownie points with those who can be of benefit,.. why not go along and play nice nice?

I'm just saying when everybody and their brother is trying to book loads through the same 3 brokers, they pass less than the other bazillion out there. They can pay well, but not the best that's for sure.

And Yellow, brokers are not greedy, that's how they feed their family, no knock on them for that.

Thats when it can pay off to be 'Chummy' with one of those brokers who has what you need.

And from what little I have taken in,.. I would classify a good portion of brokers as indeed greedy. Heck,.. I'm just as greedy as they are. I dont openly share something good that I have found with someone I dont know. I like to keep it for myself and milk that cow till she runs dry.

Its human nature to want to be successful. I like new things. I like providing for my family. Just because I talk bad about brokers doesnt mean I dont envy them a little bit. If I knew how to sit home in my shorts and live of the sweat of others I would. No shame in that.
