Call OOIDA, they can answer all these questions and give you information that you needed to know, but didn't.

When we get new trucks we just insure them and get a trip permit in each state to get them back. They are usually good for like 3 days per state and like $20.

OOIDA will sell you the insurance you need to get it to CA. With not for hire on both doors, lt can last till you get it leased on to co. you have picked out, but about a week should be plenty as long as there are no surprises on passing dot inspection at co. you picked to go with?

If you have the VIN just insure it and get a temp registration and drive it home.

CA 30 day temp permit, plus trip and fuel permits for every state along the way, plus bobtail insurance.
If you are taking interstate 15 don't forget about Arizona.

I just picked up a truck in lowa and took it to Tennessee... put insurance on it because all vehicles require it and went...

No trip permit, no fuel permit... didn’t stop at any weight stations...

Your drive out tag is all you need just as a car would be...
Fuel permit is not needed because until your registration said cmv YOUR NOT... same for weight stations are for cmv only (and vehicles over 26,000lb)

Good to know that states are different. Last time I bought one, when I went into the next state to buy a trip permit they told me as long as I had one from any state I was good to go and didn't need one in there state.

I think there’s even a option that allows you to load something back home or in your case a power only load

I did it several years ago and it was something like undue hardship??
But what I understood it to mean was they can’t expect you to go across the country with out being able to make $$ heading home
