Sucking on the government's teet for 5 months & then blowing an expensive opportunity to learn a career, all with mouths to feed -- that is a bit more than "a mistake"
OP: Go back to cdl school now and beg borrow and plead to get let back in. You may find local work right away, probably on the docks & eventually moving into the truck, but even if you have to go OTR for a year or even 2 -- you can do it. And when youre sitting around in class not being the object of your instructor's attention, you should be watching how your fellow students are doing -- seeing how they set up differently from each other when backing & what seems to work better. Trying to figure out how that one guy shifts so smoothly and what you may be doing differently. And if the class is laughing and jeering at each other, You stand up, be a man, and start cheering for the people they tease.
I just dropped out of truck school, did I do the right thing?

Okay it's obvious that I need to clear some things up here. First and for most, thank you to those here who have shown support and advice. You guys are awesome and I have been taking note of the above positive remarks and constructive criticism. To those who lack to lash out with all caps and 1st grade grammar with judgmental opinions, I feel more sorry for you than myself in the current situation.
Anyways, the time I dropped out was still in what the school calls "trial period" Therefore, the school will not be charging anyone. Including the state or the grant money I was awarded.
I'm not on any sort of welfare other than unemployment that came after 10 years of working non stop. Once I had kids, I sold all them "video games" to focus my attention on them and to put money into their savings... so thanks for jumping to the conclusion that I just want to quit to sit on my ### to play games.
Moving on, was quitting the best thing to do? possibly not. Was staying in a school that was wasting my time and an instructor and ridiculed students instead of teaching them at their learning pace a smart thing to keep going? No. Part of the reason I dropped at this point so no one would be charged for the time I was there. I don't see how sitting and standing around for hours on end waiting for just a turn that lasted an hour is any sort of education. Yes watching can be learning, but hands on experience is better for me to learn. I'm not going to a school that and instructor puts his hands on you and yells at you like you are a 5th grader. Then going to the main office to explain this and having them tell you, "oh he just really cares deep down inside and is just really pushing you to do your best"
It's obvious the instructors in the school had the attitude of get the student a CDL fast and get them out. I was taught little to nothing and felt as if I would be a danger to the general public with what little I was being given. It wasn't just me either, two of the other guys that I had spent time with grew a huge distaste for the instructor and felt a very tense and uncomfortable situation when they where in that truck.
Of course I care about my kids, why do you think I question if this was the right career move or not? If anything I learned that being away from them is harder than I thought. My son just having recent life threatening kidney surgery while I was away at school threw a huge question into play about it.
Bottom line is, I respect everyone here who drives a truck for a living, yes, even those who like to throw the harsh judgments on here. You guys are a true backbone of society and greatly under appreciated in the public view. I apologize if my post and topic offended anyone here. I'm already starting to feel better about it now that I have sat down with the wife and talked things over while reading the above. Plus I called my good friend at Greybell distributing that delivers beverages in the local community and he said to just come on down with my permit and he will get me the truck and training to get my CDL. So yeah I guess you could say one door closed, but another just opened.
In the years ahead when my kids are older and moving on in life, maybe it would be a better time for OTR. Thanks again everyone for the support...drvrtech77 and Twicebit Thank this. -
