in utah, we go to our local Background Criminal Investigations center. BCI for short. we submit fingerprints, pay $10. receive our entire criminal record and wait 30 days for letter. if approved, (meaning the appropriate timeframe has expired for the type of offenses) we take letter back to BCI. they give us another letter to which we take to the court our case went through. pay a filing fee for copies. court gets one, police get one, jail gets one, prosecuting attorney gets one. BCI gets one. you get the last copy. wait 30 days to check again. submit fingerprints and pay $10 just to make sure record is expunged.

no lawyer is necessary. total cost to DO IT YOURSELF. $85. i persoally hand delivered rather then relying on the mail system. and taking a chance that SOMEONE didn't get one.

that's how it's done in utah. i had one in idaho also, but whatever happened in that state. no one could find the records. and i checked twice. 5 years apart. didn't have to worry about expnugement in that state cuz apparently it never happened.
