I think I'm going to get my CDL then get then apply for hazmat on my first home time that way I am not bombarding myself with a bunch of stuff all at once.

The clerk at the DMV told me that the background check/fingerprinting approval takes about two days and that they find out asap, but that the notification letter can take four weeks for the TSA to generate and send to your home address.
So she told me to check back in a few days and I can test then. I did that and she was correct, it took about two days for the DMV get the fingerprint check back and approved.

Don't wait to get the notification letter. Just go in and ask the DMV. If you're approved, it will be quick.
