The CB is more of a luxury item then a necessity.I only had a CB the first 2 months of driving and have'nt had one since for the reasons the OP said.I use that area where the CB goes for more cubboard space..
I leave my CB off most of the time now

we do the speed limit too..except in CA...but dont get carried away then either...just like to know where the bears are...

The CB may not be a necessity but it sure is a good tool, especially when you get off the big roads.Giggles the Original Thanks this. -
I have a CB but keep the squelch set so that unless you are within a couple of miles I won't here you. Use it at shippers and rec.quite a bit.I'm not worried about where the bears are setting...62 MPH truck. If the DOT are checking up ahead I'm not worried there either..keep my books and paperwork straight,do a good pre-trip and if something is not right I get it fixed before leaving. I could live w/out a CB but it does come in handy.

You know, VHF for truckers like the Canadians have? Has anyone officially looked into it ? Did and won't work ?
Just curious -
I dunno.....I usually go from repeater to repeater....or 52 simplex...

I thought i was the only one... I don't even have one anymore, All the other truckers are like you aren't a real trucker cause you dont have a cb..

Most morons on the radio aren't drivers at all. They are base stations with over 100 watts of power with a really good antenna placed very high. Even if you screamed into your mic, this fool can't hear you. The other morons that make noises are also usually base stations. My favorite are the ones that dead key and make several channels totally useless, unless the other party you're talking with is very close to you.
The actual truckers that talk on the radio are very easy to pick out. The good ones have talk when they need to. The stupid ones don't say anything until a woman keys up and then they talk about how long their junk is for 20 minutes while saying "WHERE YOU AT, GIRL?" Another giveaway for the radio rookie is that these drivers will be loud and clear. A base station that is far away will sound audible, but you will learn to recognize the sound of an over modulated (loud/distorted) radio from a long range.
When I hear morons on the radio at a truck stop, I key up and yell "make way for captain longnuts" then I become another statistic on the radio. I shut it off and either leave or go to sleep -
on a much more serious note, I never key up on the road unless I have something serious to say. When I know I'll be talking for an extended period of time with another driver, I always suggest changing channels. At least a few away to prevent bleedover, etc.
I have good modulation (tweaked, peaked and tuned for talk and receive) so I mind my power so I don't stomp over everyone, but make sure I'm audible when I do get a turn to talk. -
I also leave my CB off most of the time, But! Obummer more than just SUCKS
