The first day was all right. Seemed like a ok guy. A Iraqi believe it or not who had been here since 93. I knew that we were going to have some cultural differences to be honest. In my experiences talking to foreigners I can always notice a unspoken language barrier and sure enough they were their. Things can fly over their head social ques or sayings. Well the first day I just observed. We shut down in Spreckles Ca picking up lettuce.
The next day I started driving from Salinas ca. I have never driven a Volvo and my shifting was horrendous as it should be. Well instantly in a intersection He said "What are you going to do do you want me to slap you?" Well to try and shorten this I ended up driving a few hours.
About a hour down the road we were listening to talk radio and Muslim converts were talking about being at peace while fasting for Ramadan. He became quite animated doing the universal up yours sign to the radio and went on a tantrum about Muslim this Muslim that. He was the one who chose to listen to it not me. He would also talk to the McNally gps map as if it was a real person F you, F u B. I was beginning to lose faith in him. Well when we came into Paso Robles I was rusty again in town. He went super crazy again. I made up my mind to get with another trainer and threatened to jump out of the truck. Dispatch told me they get me another trainer. I talked myself out of jumping and grabbing my bags at a gas station and tried to remain positive. Well He said if your uncomfortable I'll drive so I let him and we tried to talk it out. To me if your going to teach me please don't speak in a condescending way or threaten to slap me you will lose me. Well we did talk it out. but a hour down the road he started screaming at the gps again and I said at this point I'm grabbing my stuff next stop. I'm still in good with dispatch they understand. I'm not perfect and am not judging the guy and tried to like him. OTR is so difficult with such a steep learning curve. Is this common in trainers? Abuse or worse? Will I just get another bad one and fight in the truck all day long??

Meh, trainers are hit and miss. Also everwhere in between as well.

An ethnic Iraqi? I recommend you watch this. Watch it from about 23:00 to around 24:30. This is a Pakistani "truck" driver, training a relative. Slapping is a real common practice in that culture it would seem.

I'm by no means saying that's always the case, just seems that the comment your trainer made and the actual training of an actual middle eastern driver in the middle east involving physical assault seems to, and no pun intended here (oh who the #### am I trying to kid, I'm made of puns) it seems to be striking.

There's a huge culture gap here, but don't let that make you think all ethnic middle eastern folks are bad people. Yours just happens to be an #######, and if no one has informed you yet, they come in all shapes and sizes.

I let my first trainer go for a lot of good reasons, and my dispatcher understood. I stuck with the second guy just to get out of the truck. Find someone you can tolerate, grin and bear it. You'll be doing a lot of grinning and bearing over the next year or so.

    Best of luck.

PS- if someone hits you, it's completely unacceptable. If he threatens to hit you? It's hard to prove, still worth reporting, though. But no one isn't saying you can't hit him back.

That's completely normal and any OTR company should be prepared for that. You did the right thing by contacting your dispatch and letting them handle it rather than just blowing your emotions and dipping out at a truck stop.

Good luck on your next trainer

I did dip out at the next truck stop. I grabbed my bags while he was In the store getting coffee. At the bottom of the grapevine. I felt instantly like I just tore my class a in two, I called a relative who picked me up. I spoke with dispatch this morning they are finding a new trainer for me right now. I hope so at least. I know what I did is unprofessional. I felt guilty. Dispatch wanted me to ride back to phoenix with him. He knew he messed up. He was instantly paranoid of what I told dispatch. I was his first trainee too.

Im not a trainer but i have trained people, had one guy (swear he was on meth) threaten to pull the truck over and kick my ###. I told him to go back to the yard, told my dispatcher. His response was why didnt you kick his ### and leave him on the side of the freeway? I said next time... never had to train after that. He wants to fight? Not my fault he fell down so many times......

I agree you would have been more porfessional to take the truck and leave him.....Well maybe not. You do not need to take crap off anyone, never..
