I pull a reefer and most of my del appointments are early in the morning. Usually between 4-7. This morning I had a del appointment at 1. I usually drive at night and sleep during the day.
lynryd Thanks this. -
Team and drive the night shift like I do. I work from around 7-9 at night to 7-9 AM. Always switch out at same time, regardless of miles driven, sitting, unloading, or whatever. This keeps everyones body clock on a schedule. The miles driven usually even out in the end anyway.

lynryd and panhandlepat Thank this. -
So, you like sleepin' in, right? How about cookies and milk at bedtime? Trucking ain't for wimps, sorry, just giving it to you straight. Yeah, you can sleep in if the load you're under doesn't deliver 'till 2pm and you drove 'till 3 am the night before. But in this biz, you gotta be at the ready, all the time, because there are lots of surprises.

Sounds like you want a line haul job.
Line haul jobs are usually night time driving shifts but can vary based on the company and length of haul.
Local drivers pick up freight during the day and cross dock the freight to another trailer later in the evening. This combined freight is then transported to another terminal where it is stripped and reloaded onto another trailer for day time delivery.
Line haul drivers are found at LTL carriers but usually require experience to get your foot in the door.lynryd Thanks this. -
Thanks all.
I gotya there guy - No Wimps!
(I like oreo's, but i dont eat the white out of the middle, momma wont let me, lol)
Just askin some questions. (guess i could have worded the question differnt, tried my hand at humor) let me quantify:
~Didnt know if reefers had more very early a.m. or late night delivers/appnts than say a box or flat.
~I see alot of guys come into the TS around 15 or 1600 to get a spot. then roll out very early.
I would be hitting my stride late afternoon - evening, wondered if reefer would be more my thang.
thinkin out loud i guess.....
but yes, thanks for the replies.... live n learn! -
Reefers have stricter delivery times. Grocery warehouses are notorious for having long delays for loading AND unloading. While everyone does have to eat there are still plenty of dry van outfits and especially ltl carriers that may be a better fit for you.
Check into companies such as Fed Ex, UPS, ABF, YRC, Old Dominion, New Penn, R&L, Sai, AAA Cooper, etc.
These companies pull doubles and have line haul drivers as well as route drivers that have varying start times.
The companies I have listed are pretty tough to get into but that is because these jobs are some of the highest paying, offer the best benefits, and best home time available in the trucking industry.lynryd Thanks this. -
You gotta be flexable. Generally, while under the load, you can sleep/eat/drive however you want to work it. What screws your cycle up is the shipper/consignee. Remember, this is a 24/7 biz. So, if you load lettuce in Salinas at 10pm on Monday but you have a 7am appointment to deliver on Thur, guess what? You ain't sleepin' in, right? Or,you load at at 7am, the same thing. Trucking ain't a 9-5 job....Now go get some cookies and milk.

I had a job a few years ago that I had to roll in and open the shop # 5:30am, then on other days close 'er down at 2100, different all the time. I can do flexable.
Thanks to all contributers. I know sometimes it can be a PITA dealing with these silly questions, but we (I) do appreciate it! -
I use to drive a tanker, local. The company I worked for ran two shifts. I started at 3am, the other shift would come in at 3pm. There was a hassle sharing a truck, and the only tanker companies that will hire a newb are the really horrible ones that simply can't get experienced drivers. Personally, I hated it, but it is an option for a steady work schedule.
