Had that happen in Laredo one time. Old timer truck driver asked me the same thing. Sure enough my key unlocked his truck.
"I locked my keys in my truck. Can I use your key?"

These are just regular keys ? No chip or whatever ?
The_vett, Rideandrepair and SmallPackage Thank this. -
Yes. Frieghtliners are the most common for this because they used the same exact keys as Gm did from 1968 up until the late 90’s. So billions of vehicles shared with maybe 500-1000 key codes. And anyone who owned an old Gm knows them keys would wear out fast and become a sloppy master key. Petes from 1958 or so when door locks were optional to pretty recently used Brigg’s and Stratton made keys and codes that all 1950’s thru ‘67 Gm’s, International-Harvester’s and 50’s model Ford’s did.Sirscrapntruckalot, gentleroger, austinmike and 5 others Thank this.

...I heard that there are only 5 key combinations for peterbilt locking fuel cab ...dealer told me ...
truck can be locked due to multiple reasons ...not necessarily irresponsibility .. long day , stress going through divorce, sickness ...whatever the reason is ...but here we have a supertrucker who never locked his truck -
It kinda like a riding lawnmower. They give you a key when you buy it and you think its unique only to find out that all the brands pretty much use the same exact key.
When I was about 10 me and a few other boys thought this other kid was a magical god because he had a key in his pocket to get into the cab and start up an old road grader/blade and a backhoe we were playing around (Can’t remember if they were Cat’s or a JD’s) that were sitting in a vacant lot that was slowly getting fill dirt added to it from some local const. projects. Well come to find out a few years later his dad and grand dad owned a few of the same machines and they used the same keys. Lol.austinmike, The_vett, Crude Truckin' and 6 others Thank this. -
I lock my truck all the time. But I never lock my keys in my truck.The_vett and Rideandrepair Thank this.

semi don't use fancy keys. The only exception was the early 2000 - 2005 volvo's used a square laser cut key
Another upside to a volvo like some cars in the early 60's to lock the door when you got out you had to do it from the outside with the key. If you pushed the inside lock button and closed the door it would unlock when it closedThe_vett, broke down plumber, blairandgretchen and 2 others Thank this. -
When you lock your keys in a cabover and have to hang like a monkey on the side with a coat hanger, you don't do it a second time.

The only thing is... how do you know if that truck belongs to or is assigned to that person asking for 'help'?
Maybe they just want to rummage around to find something to steal.The_vett, Numb, expedite_it and 4 others Thank this. -
I never thought of that. Never thought the world would become that #### of a place. Look away from the stranger convulsing on the ground, he might be a con man; is the right thing to do these days.The_vett, W923, blairandgretchen and 4 others Thank this.
