Clarity is a combination of the type mike used and how much gain you set it to. Many of the garbled transmissions out there are guys who want loud over loud and clear because they turn the mike gain up by default along with their power mikes, crystal mikes or whatnot. Modulation should be swinging up close to 100% when talking reasonably loud, as if a window were open. You'll be clear as beer.
Remember that the meters on the radios are smalltime devices, not prone to accuracy.

 

The 4600 is a great radio but make sure you get it from the correct radio shop and that you have a proper antenna system to use with it.

Do a search for a good radio shop such as Custom CB radios. They take the radio out of the box and run it across the bench to make sure it is working as advertised and on the channels you want it to. Most GOOD shops don't charge extra for this.

If it is going into a truck that uses the CB antenna for both the AM/FM radio and the CB radio then you will need to upgrade the antenna system to seperate the two. Meaning getting rid of the multiplexer box and going with regular coax to the antennas and mounting a seperate antenna for the AM FM radio. The multiplexer boxes in these trucks don't like much power at all.

Also get a good noise cancelling mic along with it such as the Astatic 636.

If you get a big raidio it's a good idea to find someone who really works on them that knows what breaks and what don't. When they make these radios they go through a machine that just spots just enough solder on them to work. It takes a few hours but a good tech will go through and add more solder to the parts that are prone to break after a few years. I have a Galaxy 99V. When it broke many tech's said it would cost too much to fix and I would need to buy a new circuit board. I took it to Strickolean in Atlanta and he fixed it for $100.00 and said it won't break again. He said he went hrough the whole thing and it took 7 hours but it's fun for him and they dont make a 99 anymore and he likes them too much to throw away.
