I am sure you have all encountered this question many times but this is my first time asking it. Me and my friend are really wanting to get into trucking. I was a trainee at FedEx for 4 months with their LTL untill I was laid off.

We both have seen all the company web sites and I have talked with a few drivers at the locals truck stops. But we both need some more inside info. If anyone could let me know what company is best or a list of companies that would be a good start.

I know that every company has it's issues, I know I will be OTR for some time. But we both have a fire. I come from a trucking/military family and I am half there but I need the trucking half now. My goal is owner operator or going back to FedEx (which is an option because I have the green light to return after I get 1 year experience).

So if any former newbies or current newbies and old heads could give me some insight on where to go and what would be the best for me and my buddy. I would appreciate it very much. Thanks!

Really your best bet is to start reading through the tons of information in the first three sub-forums - "bad trucking company," "favorite trucking company," and "inside scoop."

At the present time the best company is the one that will hire you. Stay there for a year and then make the decision to stay or move times are tuff right now.

"Don't all newbies need a helping hand?" the OP basicly says. I would go a step farther, and say every driver on the road at some point needs a helping hand. Too bad there are more drivers out there whos ego or pride gets in the way more often than not who, when they DO get the help, have a hard time saying "thank you". Let alone offer some help the next time the roles are reversed.

I just got job offers from Central Refridgerated, Werner and Swift. I have friends that work for swift and central and both say just don't turn down loads and you'll be fine.

My husband started with Swift 9 years ago, and says they are a good starting point. I know there is a lot of threads related to them in this forum, but since he is no longer there and hasn't been for years, I have not read them, but I am sure there is tons of info from many different perspectives....good luck.

Just take anything the recruiter says with a grain of salt... a really big grain.
But yeah, a job is a job is a job, right now.

The grain of salt I was fed was the size of a Pete. But I totally agree with a job is a job.

Also I have been told by drivers I have met I should expect around 2500 to maybe 3000 miles a week. Is that good or bad? The drivers told me that is low miles wise but pretty good with the economy and all. I did the math and it's more than I make now in corrections.

    Hortonclutch,
There is no bad place to start. Make a decision, move forward, and don't question that decision. There are a lot of negative posts on this board. Most are completely ungrounded. Don't ask the recruiter where the pot of gold is and you won't be lied to. Here is the bottom line... THERE IS NO POT OF GOLD, you will not be coddled, you will be expected to perform, the expectation is that you accomplish the assigned task. You will be away from home for an extended period of time. You will work 24/7. It will be what you make of it. Set your expectations accordingly. Don't listen to negative remarks you read on here, every one of them comes with a caveat. and if I haven't mentioned it, you will not be coddled. Make your decision, move forward, do not question yourself.

One other thing, if you don't have any common sense, gain some. Your satisfaction will be driven by your ability to operate in what appears to be non-sensical situations. If you allow yourself to get wrapped around the BS you will never be satisfied in trucking. In fact, you will end up one of the folks on here whining about how somebody pissed in your oatmeal. Learn to smile about the things that make no sense and do the job you are assigned.
