I live in CA. and I'm looking for a company that will hopefully keep me on the west coast or at least western part of the U.S. I have had my CDL since 1998, however I have never been "OTR", so I guess companies look at me as a rookie, which is fine I know I'll have a lot to learn. If you wanted to run the I-5 corridor who would you try to get on with? Also will some people please give me the pros and cons of team driving Vs. solo? Also I'm sure you can tell by the questions I'm asking AND the questions I'm NOT asking, how much I DON'T know. Please educate me. Sign me, A Greenhand. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Look into Milgard manufacturing, batesville caskets, and check the bigger companies....ie. swift, ryder.... etc. they do alot of dedicated in california .
schneider and j.b. hunt does alot of dedicated out there as well....
I would never endorse going OTR with any of them but if you are looking for steady local to tri state work then thats where i would start....
    Phone calls are cheap !

Its a shame otr doesn't consider local driving as experience. The reason why I don't drive otr. Team driving only works with husband wife. No money to drive team with someone else. Then there is the compatability. That's a long day when you have to be in the rig with somebody you don't see eye to eye with. My advice, stay local. More money and home every night/ day. But if you don't have work now then you have to do anything that comes you.

You have two problems. 1st you had a class a CDL sense 1998 which means you are not a fresh out of school student. 2nd You have no OTR experience which means your an untrained rookie. At this point, You are un-employable. You have two choices stay out of trucking or go back to school like it was day one and get a new CDL. Never saying a word about the old one.

That's funny because I did not see anywhere in the original posting that he doesn't have a license anymore. He said he's had his license since 98 but has never drove otr so therefore, he has no experience otr. How does that make him unemployable? I'm new here but I've been reading a lot of the posts and I see that people are putting in their 2 cents w/o fully understanding what they are reading. Its happened to me earlier in my posting hazmat placarding. I THINK TRANSLATION IN SPANISH MIGHT BE IN ORDER.

Let me break this down nice and slow for you. He has had his CDL sense 98. With me so far? He has never driven OTR. Still with me? He has had his CDL TO LONG to be a student. As far as most companies are concerned. If you did not just get your CDL in the last 6 months. Then you have had it too long. Been too long sense you where in school. There are plenty of people who just got out of driving school we can hire. We don't want you. BUT he has NO experience driving OTR. Which means he is an untrained rookie. So if they are looking for EXPERIENCED drivers. He dose not qualify for that either. Now re-read my last post and try to stay up this time.:biggrin_25525:

Pal, the word HAD was what I got from your post. Well, so what makes an inexperienced driver fresh outta school better than a local driver with say 12 yrs experience as in the poster here. Now keep in mind that ALL the schools teach you is how to pass the dmv test. Everything else is learned with time. I think what you are rambling about is otr companies rather hire new than experienced just so they can keep costs down or are you implying that otr companies won't hire experienced because its been along time we went to school and forgot about everything they were supposed to teach us. You still with me or is this mind boggling for you?

If you want to run mostly I-5, you live in Merced...perfect, give DHE (Dependable Highway Express) a call...Sacramento terminal, also Fresno terminal, and one in Stockton...either OTR, or local...recruiting out of Sacramento, ask for George, he is the recruiter. Good luck to you...good steady company, just bought out the LTL end of Matheson Fast Freight, deal will be official end of January.

No team with DHE...team is only good when all miles go to one household..

Don't worry about the ins and outs, we don't have quallcom, we use nextel phones and they are easy to get to know...good people here, and the drivers will help you over any rough spots along the way.
