Call the DMV and at least ask if it is true, but one dude runs his truck on IL plates not to have paid that tax and his truck was used and bought in Chicago also. The company he is leased on to is in IL though, so he registered his equipment under their business but still pays all the registration amount himself - about 2000 a year. The other I spoke with once, had some agent in Oklahoma through him he registered his tractors and trailers. But his equipment was bought new, so he said this way he had saved a fortune.
I need advice, purchasing a truck from Chicago how to register it in Nevada?

I was planning to register it here in Chicago because the company that I will work for is from Chicago. The down side was that here in Chicago my appointment to do the IRP is 19 april and they told me it's going to take another 2 weeks until I'm going to be able to work with the truck

In IL they can give you 45 day temporary registration. It is a piece of paper that you display in the passenger side top corner of your windshield. It takes only a day or a few to get it. I think you can get it the same day if you go to a specific Secretary of State office that deals with trucks and CDLs. Then within 45 days the new plate comes in. Your company is in Chicago so it all would be legit too.Bean Jr. Thanks this.

So basically, I'm buying the truck under my name, then lease it to the company and work under their DOT, do is still need to make the IRP?

It is common to buy a truck under your name and lease it to a different company, that has the MC# and that company may or may not pay for the registration (IRPA) too. They don't have to pay for the IRPA (which is registration we're talking about) but they can allow you to register it under their business and let you pay for it. If they they do, it is them who are responsible to do the IRPA filings and reports every year. Some companies are advertising even "come to us and we'll get your plates paid for ..."

So if they let me use their IRP I just add my truck to their account and then get the 45 days plates and I'm good to roll?Bean Jr. Thanks this.

The other thing to consider is whether the registration has anything to do with your having to pay the sales tax in NV. I don't know that for sure. But would they even know that you are the owner of the truck until you register it there? So if you want to be 100% sure you need to ask in NV DMV.
visoiuvlad Thanks this. -
For the purpose of rolling yes. The question remains if you still need to pay that tax...The guys I spoke with said no and that's why they never registered their trucks in NV. I would think that too. But in NV DMV, they might think different.visoiuvlad Thanks this.

But I would just register it in IL and roll without thinking much of what they think in NV.visoiuvlad Thanks this.

I also still have residency here in Chicago so I'll just register the truck here because in Nevada from what I heard before you get the plates they need to see proof that you payed purchase tax and is 8.1%
