I'm looking at a '91 IH 9300, 9 speed, 6x2, knee deep in virgin rubber, new brakes, for $7500.

Truck is super clean with only 552k miles.
Dealer says it's a 350 big cam cummins.
    How can I confirm?
What is the difference between a 350 and a 400?

Are there any easy hp/reliability mods? Ive read about changing a spring and fuel return line, but no details were given. It's supposed to make fuel pressure even between all cylinders creating a smoother running engine.

Truck doesn't have cruise control. Does anyone offer a kit?

My searches for 350 cummins brings me to cummins swaps in F350s :biggrin_25523:

I'm almost positive I'm going to buy this truck.

    Engine data plate will confirm.
400 has lower compression than 350 and runs higher boost.
Dual fuel line is for feeding fuel to front and rear cyl heads instead of just the rear head.
Pump can be modded, but you give up some reliability if you go to extremes. They run very good in stock form and you might be very surprised. They are known to last longer than a 400 without major repairs.
Not sure about cruise but everything you could ever want is made today so I'm sure someone can supply it.

I would be really leery of a 21 year old truck with only 552k on it, that means it's been doing a lot of sitting, and that tends to make stuff wear out that you wouldn't expect. That may have virgin rubber on it, but how old is it? How old are the seals? Most likely some (or most) of them are dry rotted.

My last company truck was a pristine, garage kept '91 Mack with a standup sleeper with only 500k on it. It had been used to pull an asphalt tanker locally, and the sleeper had never been used, it still had plastic on the carpet. My boss bought it for $6k when the company was shutting down, $20k and three times behind a wrecker later, and it was a great truck. This was in early '08, so it wasn't even as old as the one you're looking at.

On the cruise control check out King Cruise Control. I've talked to a couple of guys with older trucks that have installed it on their mechanical engines, and loved it.

    Thanks for the link.

Nothing on this truck is dryrotted. Ill replace a few smell items line flexible fuel lines. Tires are like new. Not even the brake lines nor the airbags show any cracking.

Any downside to a 6x2? I hardly ever use the power divider.

A 6x2 would only have one drive axle and no power divide with a lift axle wouldnt it?

You can search NTC 350 big cam for better results.

Didn't the big cam series have a cam problem? Something about flaking and chunking ?

Doesn't the big cam have just that embossed on the side of the engine in raised letters? "Big Cam" and weren't there 4 series ? (1,2,3,4 ) ?

NTC is the series of the 855 cubic inch turbo charged version. The early versions were naturally aspirated.

Yes, the cam takes the load when running high fuel pressure. Yes, the big cam blocks are embossed.
