Hello, I need some help on what to do. Two weeks ago my brother passed away from an unexpected heart attack. He was an O/OP for 10 years. He left his truck to me in a will. It is a 9400 International 2007 year. It has a ISX cummins engine 450 HP, 10 speed OD trans a 72 IN sleeper mid roof. Tandem axle, 12000 front 40000 rear. The truck has a little over 400000 miles on it with a two year 200000 mile warranty remaining. By the way the truck is PAYED OFF. The problem is I have no CDL or know anything about trucking. The truck is just sitting in my yard. I start school next month to get my CDL but I know companies won't hire you as a O/OP without experience. What should I do. By the way he pulled flatbed so he had all the equipment tarps, chains, straps the whole nine.
I need some advice!!!!

I would say get your CDL and get hired onto a company that hires students and stay as a company driver until you get enough experience at least a year maybe two than go out as an owner opp. because with no experience no company will let you lease onto them .... now in the meantime I would try and lease your brothers truck with a flatbed company and look to hire an experienced driver to drive it for you while at the sametime you work as a company driver that way you will have two checks coming in or at least one guaranteed that's what I would do anyways

So sorry about your brothers passing ballcoach.Well get some exp maybe a yr or so.Whatever you do don't sell that trk,it sounds like that was your brothers pride and joy.Don't think he would want you to sell it since it's already paid off.Just start it every now and then.Anyway get some exp. Then become an O/O.There might be some companies that'll take you with 6 months otr exp.
ballcoach and Cranky Yankee Thank this. -
Get some experience. Just leave your brothers truck alone. Don't put anyone in it. That would be a bad mistake IMO. Get it into tip top shape while you truck for someone else. MOST IMPORTANT!!! DON'T TELL ANY PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYER YOUR PLANS. Or even about the truck. You'll thank me later for that. Then when you feel confident make the switch to O/O.

A payed off truck, you are in a great position to do your own thing just as soon as you are able. Get some experience and start looking at companies to lease on with down the road. Sorry about your brother but IMO he took care of you if you want it.
Cranky Yankee and ballcoach Thank this. -
yeah, like crazy said (or is that crazy is as crazy does?) tell no one about the truck, start as a company driver somewhere, start researching about being an o/o TODAY, and dont stop til you feel you are ready. i would not put anyone else in the truck at this point either. im assuming you know nothing about the industry, and little about repairs to the truck. you got a lotta learning to do, and letting the truck sit (starting it regularly of course) is a better idea than going into the business side flying completely blind imo. good luck to you...and sorry about your brother.
bullhaulerswife, ballcoach and Cranky Yankee Thank this. -
Sorry to hear about your brother. Get on with a flatbed company like tmc. Run their truck for a while make some money and fix whats wrong with that international and then lease it on. DO NOT LEASE IT OUT, DO NOT PUT A DRIVER IN IT! It wouldnt be wise as most dont care about what isnt theirs. Your brother has set you up very well keep his legacy going. And when you get enough ahead to pay tribute to him paint a mural of him on his sleeper. Thats what id do if i were you. Be a good way to thank him and a good way to remember him. Good luck driver
ballcoach, droflex, Cranky Yankee and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks guys for the responses. I know nothing about truck right now. I even had to get a guy to drive the truck to my house. He said that the truck is in excellent condition. I am not selling it!!!!! I am going to learn all I can.
superpet39 and SheepDog Thank this. -
you dont even have to worry about restricting yourself to flat bed the truck is the important part
not saying transam is where you should go but if you did go there as a company driver for a while
then you could lease your truck to them and keep learning a lil longer till your ready to strike out on your ownballcoach Thanks this. -
you could check out dart they lease pretty early
