As to DOT reportable, your company or yourself is required to report it to the DOT under certain conditions. It has nothing to do with whether a DOT person shows up at the scene. This is from Part 390.5
Accident means—
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2) of this definition, an occurrence involving a commercial motor vehicle operating on a highway in interstate or intrastate commerce which results in:
(i) A fatality;
(ii) Bodily injury to a person who, as a result of the injury, immediately receives medical treatment away from the scene of the accident; or
(iii) One or more motor vehicles incurring disabling damage as a result of the accident, requiring the motor vehicle(s) to be transported away from the scene by a tow truck or other motor vehicle.
So, if any of the above applies, you have to report it to the DOT. You also have to have a drug test. Since it was in the past the drug and alcohol thing are too late. Was it your truck or a company truck?Toomanybikes and KriegHund Thank this. -
MidWest_MacDaddy and David_Simpson Thank this.

I'd do everything in my power to prove I had no involvement with what happened and human error was not there before looking for another job. I'd also get the company to write a letter stating it was an unavoidable accident
Best of luck -

I'd like to know how someone is expected to maintain control when the rear suspension breaks and the axle falls out (I'm guessing that's what OP is trying to say when he said the wheels hit each other). I wasn't there, don't know what happened but holding the truck on your side of the yellow line and taking the ditch is a lot better than crossing the centerline and hitting someone IMO. I mentioned in a post a while back about a co-worker who wrote off a medium duty truck. The steering box broke internally and he couldn't steer. Nothing he could have done. #### happens. At least he walked away with only a minor hand injury in that case.

Just wait it out until you find out if you will be fired.
If it's mechanical failure, probably won't be fired.
If otherwise, there's a few companies that will probably hire you. Keep us posted. -
I am left wondering if a proper pre-trip wouldn't have caught the issue.
