What? You mean that thing's not stainless? I never should have gotten rid of my SS Motorola 1/4 wave whip, darn.

Since this thread was about camper use, I saw one other solution: some guys have built antennas on top of the camper (dead center is best) that fold down for city driving, but you see the obvious disadvantage there. I even have friends with electric motors and gears on theirs in their pickups, because they're running tall fighting sticks.
"Uh, I'll be right back man, gotta go under a stoplight..." -
SS is available, but most are chrome plated.

I still think you should have mounted that antenna on the top of the rack on the top back of your camper so you would get a full 360 degree send and receive.
That antenna will see everything especially that camper behind it now.
I think if you would have gotten a no ground plane antenna and put it on top and checked it with a good swr meter you could have tuned it to no higher than about 1.2 to 1 across the 40 freaks.
You should be ok now especially if you have a good swr now.
A good Astatic Mic with what you have should allow you to talk a reasonable distance. -
Just the other day I was thinking about a No ground plane set up. But This set up should work ok. I don't get to go camping or fishing much any more. But this should work ok for what I need. I am going to install my Cobra 19DX in this truck. Its not a big radio, but it still talks.
I will use the Cobra 29 in my next 18 wheeler (Company Truck). -
Double post , sorry
