I am in the process of buying a new over the road truck. Not a lease, CASH , from my 401k and investments. I am a somewhat new driver but know that I love it and am single. My main questions are , who to sign on with, what could I seriously expect to make per 1000 miles, how are expenses broken down, fuel, insurance, maint, truck pmt back to me, and also my pay Thank you in advance for your help

    scottied67 and 123456 Thank this.

You're really supposed to know all this before you buy a truck unless you're paying for it in full up front with no payments. Otherwise if you have payments to make you're really supposed to know all that info before you buy a truck including having a carrier already lined up.

    1) DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! use your 401k to buy a truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't forget the 10% penalty for early withdrawl and the 20% in taxes you will have to pay.

    2) Since you are new to this industry, DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! buy a truck. Become a company driver first and learn the ropes. Otherwise you will be eaten alive. I exagerate not!

I think there should be a new thread docked at the top of the page that all these threads get merged into. Maybe it could be called,

"I have little or no experience in the trucking industry, I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm going to buy a truck-will you please give me some positive re-enforcement to lull me into a false sense of security."

Thank you jdrentzjr for your input. here is a little more explination. I have the cash, taxes already paid for 90 % of a new truck, maybe I will finance 10% instead of using some from 401k . I am a company driver now of 6 mos for the company that most people make fun of. I am sick of making 26 cpm, and being forced dispatched when I am financially able to do much better

Just because you might be an owner/op doesn't necessarily mean you'll net a whole lot more than a company driver. You've only been a company driver for 6 months and in my opinion you seem somewhat impatient. After you drive for a year you can look for a higher paying job. You must be patient if you are an owner /op because the grass isn't always greener on the other side. If you're asking the questions you asked in this forum you probably aren't ready yet to be an o/o. You have to do your own research and make contacts with a lot of companies to have an idea of which one will work best for you. Only you will know what's best for you... not us.

    Enough of the harping.........

    it's his money....Done Deal !!!!!

    Lets help him !!!

He is in Georgia, that is a decent start.

There are many companies to lease to, but insurance may be a problem-not enough experience !!

Thanks to you 123456, and also jdrentzjr , At the top of this page it said ask an owner operator, well that is what I am doing. I am a grown man, somewhat successful, Quit a good job to do something I always thought I would like. and have found out that I do like it . and when most people said I couldn't do it I also found that I can still for the most part run in the daytime and sleep at night . thanks to all for you continued input, But my question is not if I should buy a truck, but the best path to take afterword.
