well not knowing anything about trucking and you want to hire truck drivers. what do you and your partner do in relation to trucking? do you haul for a company or depend on brokers? you know i agree something just don't smell right here. hire you a consultant to educate you and your partner before your truck's end up in mexico and you can't find them.

My partner is a trucker and is spear heading the operation. I am the guy at home trying to do the work while he is on the road.

Sound fishy, maybe. Unrealistic goals for income. Maybe.

But I am trying to learn a little about this from another prospective rather than just from him. Plus, I feel its my duty to do some research and learn. My book is this forum right now.

If you're good about paying your drivers every week and ontime.Keep them in consistant miles.Don't jew them out of pay,you may be surprised how well these drivers will work for you.You interviewing them works both ways. These drivers may be interviewing you as well. Many drivers are lazy because why get motivated if they sit and sit and the pay just is'nt there.I'm not at all motivated with my job.I like the company but the pay has alot to be desired.

ok that's a little good info. how long has your partner been trucking? do you have your own authority? or you leased on to a company? the reason i'm asking these questions is they are the same question's a driver is going to ask you aand if you can't give him an intelegent answer then that's a red flag for him. just guessing you are not ofering any benifits.see to start with it don't matter if your hiring someone to ride the back of a trash trck and pickup trash or your hiring a ceo for yor company the basic questions are the same and some are[how much exprience do you have -- what is your work history how many jobs have you had ---ever been fired from a job if so when-- the most important thing for me was the longer i sat a talked to a person one on one i could pretty much tell what kinda person they were. then after you get thru all the personal stuff and the person intrest you then you can talk about trucking.but here is one the biggest problem's you are going to encounter, and it is one of the biggest reasons i sold my business and quit.as a small business you don't have alot to offer drivers such as vacation sick time - good health insurance, 401k and so on. these are a few of the things in a company that good driver's are looking for and of course the pay. so to begin with you have got to determine how much you will acept from your applacants because most everyone who you interview is more than likely carring some baggage with them. in today's world if they think they can get hired to drive for you and not have to take a drug test you will have people standing in line to go to work for you.now get you a applacation printed up and make sure it's what you want wiyh all the right questions on it, this elimanates alot of interveiwing. make sure you have the forms to run back ground checks and credit report and score, make sure on your app that you put will be given pre employment drug screen. now i could go on and on but i hate typing i'm am a outdoor person handson guy but if i can help you i feel like i need to sit here and help you and i'm sure there or many guy's and gal's here that will do the same.

one important thing i left out, in trucking you allway's want the driver's DAC report i'm sorry i don't know the web adress but maby someone can put it up here. you can go to the web page and print it off and the driver sign's it and that gives you the autority to check his file.

Run a credit check? Why would you need that 10speed55?

Do the normal back ground check,DOT physical and Pre-employment drug screen.
Call and send the required DOT form out to previous employers.

Look for guys who have not jumped from job to job all of their driving career.

Most drivers want decent trucks, good pay and fair home time.

if the driver has bad credit and wages have been garnashied or owes child support it's alot of extra paper work for the employer to do. and alot of time's the company don't find this out till after the fact. you got to alot a times set up payment thru the court it's a mess. but now days that info may be on back ground check not sure

Many do not realize the $ and BS you go through hiring a dead beat driver , credit check is a must nowdays.

Also if the driver shows up for an interview with another companies truck & trailer and tells you he can start RIGHT AWAY , he likely will quit you in a heartbeat as well.

my wife still brings it up ever now and again. we hired a boy and he owed child support and all this stuff is registred with the state so when you pay his state tax that throw's up a flag then you are getting paper's in the mail to apear in front of the judge to sign a document stating that you will send x amout of this person's check to the court each week. i tell you if you have never been in business there is alot of behind the seen's stuff that you got to deal with. that's what surprizes me about these guy's wanting in the trucking business without a clue.
