Gearjammer, don t worry about not being able to shift a manual. When you go to truck driving school, you will have people that don't know how to shift or back for that matter. As long as you have the patience and determination to learn, you ll do fine. Alot of truckers have been in the same predicament as you. When you first learn how to shift, you will notice the difference in shifting between bobtailing and pulling a trailer

That's comforting to know!!! Honestly. I was thinking it was a huge issue. Getting all worked up for nothing.

Stop trying to learn a stick now. Don't even bother. (Save a little old lady from a heart attack.):biggrin_2559:

Seriously, it is what everyone has said. You probably will do better than you would if you had been driving a stick all your life.

You can find a company that will rent a automatic and take your test with that. Unfortunately you will have a restriction on your CDL that only allows you to drive automatics. Same with air breaks, you can take the test in a vehicle without but you will have that restriction.

Waiting to hear back from a truck driving school in my area. Happened to notice they do offer a 2 hour course on driving a manual transmission vehicle. Might need 4 hours but at least it's offered. Thanks for all the responses. Now on to the next big hurdle.....Remembering everything for the road test in regards to the pre-trip inspection!!! But don't let me get ahead of myself!!!!!

Im in cdl school right now and till today I never drove a stick either. I wouldnt say I am great at it but I am learning. My instructor actually said that they prefer people who have never driven a stick as they dont have to be reprogrammed. Lol. So I wouldnt worry about it.

In a truck its easy. Just let off the clutch slow with no gas. No balancing act lol.

I would strongly recommend against learning to drive a truck and taking the test with an automatic transmission. Much better to take the challenge of learning and taking the test in a manual transmission. Having the automatic restriction on your CDL will limit your opportunities. The majority of trucking companies use manual transmissions.

Yeah I plan on learning on a truck I have to shift. No automatic for me. And that's why because most companies have manual transmission vehicles. When I take my CDL permit test it will be for General Knowledge, Air Brakes & Combination Vehicles.
