Hello everyone! I hope that you all have been having a great week so far. Well, I'm seeking your advice about what would be the best route for me to take in getting a CDL. I got out of the Army not long ago and I have the GI Bill that I can use to enroll in a truck driver training program at a local Community College. I'm just not sure if that's the road that I should take or should I go with one of the large companies such as Swift, Prime, CR England, Schneider etc. The program offered at the Community College is 2 months long and fairly inexpensive and I would be getting paid to attend. Thank you for your help and advice! :occasion5:

I would use the GI Bill. If you go with one of the Mega Carriers you are contracted for one year to pay the school off.

Community college hands down over any stand alone cdl mill

You'll have better training and more importantly you'll have options in where you go. You won't be a company sponsored slave tied to a contract.

The NC community college system has one of the best training programs in the country. I went to the Davie campus program in mocksville a little over 4 years ago.

Not only do they have the usual suspects recruiting from there but they also have contacts with smaller, more local outfits.

Living in NC you have one of the best programs available. Take advantage of it. You'll be glad you did.

Hey brother, take the community college route and call your own shots. You will be very glad you did for all the reasons others have stated. If you wdant to go with one of those companies, you can, but with the option of leaving after 35000 miles to go with a better company. Get yourself two clean years and you can work for TSMT on the DOD contract. Its good money.

GI Bill and Community College. Hands down. You earned it, take advantage of it. You will get better training this way. Best of luck to you.

I went to PDI out of Rochester NY and used my GI Bill. Once I graduated I had the pick of the litter. What's also great is some of the mega carriers will allow you to continue to use your gi bill for an additional yr to supplement your income

Thanks everyone for replying and the kind words! I just have one mission to accomplish right now and that's passing the CDL permit test at the DMV so that the college will accept me into their program.
