    Sharon, think about a back packer using GPS. Not everybody using a gps is using it in a car or truck. If you do some research on GPS for hikers / trail you may find something that is closer to what youre looking for. Some units can multitask and perform in both modes.

    You can buy stand alone trail gps unit, or apps for iphone or android phones. Tons of stuff out there to be had.
