I get all my work done at outside shops when I can, like if I'm at a truckstop with a *Good* shop resetting hours-Wingfoot and Qfix are good for basic stuff. The company shops are overwhelmed-too many trucks, not enough mechanics, so they miss things and end up doing over rather than doing right. Also to be considered is the cost of downtime. I had my APU pm'd recently, they charged me over $100 for a job that I have seen TK dealerships advertise for 35 bucks. But it was convenient, so it's a matter of shop cost vs. downtime cost-taking a day off just for service can cost $600 in lost revenue. I try to have as much as I can done when I'm already on downtime, and I'm lucky to live near 2 Freightliner dealerships. They don't fault you for this, as a matter of fact I was told when I signed up to be an O/O that it's a good idea. Also a good idea to learn how to do what you can do yourself-any decent mechanic will show you where your zerks are so you can lube between pm's. I try to lube mine every 10k miles at least.
