I'am a Single 42 year old man wanting to become an OTR Truck Driver so bad I can almost taste it! A few years back I spent night after night of doing research, which here I find myself doing all over again! First off I want to say that I have been wanting to be a Truck Driver since a child! I have no obligations to be anywhere at anytime, so therefore, I can be out on the road across the country for as long as desired. I have a Super Clean Driving record since I was 16 years old. I'am very safe and constantly aware of my surroundings while on the road. I take Driving very seriously and Safely! and Yes!, here it comes, I'am about to get to my main point that has me pulling my hair out with frustration!!!
Just shy of 17 years ago, for the FIRST and ONLY time I have EVER been in trouble in my whole life, I had a Great Job working for Ford Mo. Co., and one night I caught myself a Felony!! I took full responsibility for my actions of what I remember happening. I do have to add to the fact that I was Mis-diagnosed by a Doctor and put on a certain Medication that I know led to my actions. I'am not making excuses for my actions, but I know in my heart, because of those meds, I didn't know what I was doing. This happened a year into my job with Ford. I never went to prison, but did spend a few months in County Jail and probation. I did manage to keep my job and continued working with Ford for almost 9 years to finally realizing that being a 'Factory Rat' was not for me. So I moved to Florida to take care of my dying Father and also take care of my Mother and have been with the same job here in the Restaurant Business for almost 9 years in Management. MY MAIN QUESTION IS: Do I have a chance at getting Hired as an OTR Truck Driver??? I'am a very honest person but 'am afraid that the ONE mistake in my life will prevent me from Becoming what I truly Desire, and that is Driving Truck! I have been wanting to get into a School to get my CDL with a company and be hired by them after graduation. Please Please Please folks...............Where do I start and do I have a chance, I appreciate your time and I totally respect this Profession! Also, I live in Florida where it seems a lot of companies don't hire out of for some reason. Thank you all again! God Bless.............Theo
I really need help and advice with the hopes of making Trucking my Final Career!!

Theo, No the issue of once in your life you will not be banned from getting into trucking, In would certainly check out your options as to what to do with your schooling, If you have the cash to go and pay for it then you can get on with a company that will repay your schooling back to you and then you can probably stay on as long as you like, Or you can go to one of these not so good companies that will take a body with blood running on its highways and you will go to their school, and you will take their courses an then they will put you in a truck and then they will treat you like their indentured servant for a year till you pay them back for the schooling. I suggest to all I talk with and on here as well, where ever you go whatever you do stay with the company you go with for at least a year, you don't want to be known and a job jumper! Good luck, I assume Mom has passed as well. Welcome to the forum, and welcome to trucking!

lovtotruck: Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it very much. What comes to mind right off the bat is CREngland. Because honestly, no, I do not have the money upfront right now to dish out for schooling. And I have heard some stories like you said about the first year. I really need a Company with the Schooling option all in one package. I can tough it out for a year, since I have read over and over, the First year expect to not make much money, get treated not so good, etc... But once one makes it after the first year, then things start to get better. So I have read. And I do know that I do not and will not get talked into Leasing. I want to be a Company Driver or a Team Company Driver for as long as possible and possibly make that transition into leasing when I get some good experience under my belt. My concern is whether or not I would get accepted. I want to be honest when that question comes up on the app. about ever been convicted of a felony. And with so many people out there applying, my app will get tossed. Or not being honest and saying No, never been convicted, then I'am a Liar and Dishonest! And I don't want to be dishonest. ...................Any particular company 'lovetotruck', in your opinion, where I should go to finance my schooling and pay back while I work for them? Thank you again!!

Check with yoir local county government and see if you can get them to pick up the tab. That way you can go to a pricate school and choose the company you want to work for. Here in Ohio I did what was called the WIA program. They pay for specialized training for you if you are unemployed or low income. Obviously, each state will have different requirements. Good luck.

You do realize that you won't be around at a moments notice to help your Mother out ,as you stated you do from time to time?
Schools vary in costs IMO you would be better off working a second job, even delivering pizzas will get you the money
to pay for school since you stated you have no commitments! If you've done your research here then you already know
like BCowboy63 mentioned there are programs out to assist, and there are plenty of nightmarishstories from people that say "Don't do what I did". Good luck in your quest!Theo222 Thanks this. -
1st question....Are you still taking those med's you took when you got into trouble. If not , good. Also depending on the type of felony you may still be classified as UN-employable by some companies. But you will still be able to find work...just as long as you're not on any kind of med's that the DOT lists as a non starter. You also may check the community colleges local to you , most offer a CDL training course and there is all kinds of ways to get the funds through financial aid programs that they offer. SOME OF THESE FUNDS ARE EVEN FREE. Doing this will give you many more options as far as where you can apply for work , and will more than likely give you a selection of felony-friendly carriers. Good LUCK.

You might have a problem with some carriers due to where you live. Some carriers don't hire out of Florida. The felony has been over 10 years, so that should not be a problem with some companies. Policies concerning felonies varies from one carrier to another. Some won't hire anyone with a felony regardless of how long ago. You won't be able to enter Canada with a felony in your past. I would call some of the training carriers such as Swift, CRST, Roehl, Millis, U.S. Xpress, Covenant, etc., Explain your felony and ask if they would hire you. If you need more companies, check the company listings on this and other trucking forums. If you live near a truck stop, go by and pick up some of the trucking magazines. They are free and filled with ads from companies looking for drivers. You should expect to be away from home at least 3-6 weeks while training and then at least a couple of weeks and then home for a day or two.
