I can hear it now. Everyone is going to say that I'm desperate, or worse. I might have said the same thing if I'd read about it. But I did it anyway.
I was working what I call Las Vegas hours. Going in the sleeper at five AM and getting up at three in the afternoon. Drove about an hour and a half then stopped at the Iron Skillet for breakfast. Sat at the counter. Busy hour, most people chowing down on the dinner buffet. Waitress asked me what I wanted to drink. Sets down menu. Nice but non descript lady. She brings glass than another girl steps up to take order.
Lovely and sweet. Not flirty, but professionally courteous. Did the proper check backs while I was eating. She along with the other servers were busy but still took a few moments to make me feel at home.
Asked me which way I was heading. Do I go through here often? The meal was only fair. Steak under cooked and over seasoned. I told her that as I paid the check. She said she was sorry. Not your fault, I said. But the service was fabulous. She smiled like a movie star and thanked me. Said the usual Be safe and come back soon.
I automatically started to toss the receipt on my way out to the lot then had a flash. I looked at it and saw her name at the top. Eight hours later, at two am while on my mandatory thirty I went on line and ordered flowers for her. Nothing fancy, three roses and the little green and yellow trimming in a simple glass vase.
I requested that they be sent to her during her shift that day.
I wrote a message to go on the little attached card.
Steak was so so, the day was gloomy. You were the brightest part. Thanks, take care. signed Me.

You never know what will work but most chicks dig flowers. Try to get her number next time.
PE_T, Bakerman and Flashdrive7 Thank this. -
Random act of kindness. You will likely never see her again, but she will always remember you and tell the story untold number of times.
When I get top notch service, particularly if it is clear she/he deals with all of their customers in a professional courteous manner, and when I really needed it, tough day, bad weather etc, I leave a big tip, and I mean really be tip, like 50% of the cost of the meal. I have been known to leave a $20 on a $10 meal.
Good for you.
And I have given up on the chopped steak and eggs at Iron Skillet. Whomever their supplier is has made them less than appetizing.Flashdrive7 and MBAngel Thank this. -
I recall one waitress (I recall many, but this is one I choose for this thread) out of the Frederick Truckstop in the old 76 there off Md 355 at I-70. It happened to be my home stop so Im there pretty often. Even though Childhood I was there often. They have always been more than accommodating knowing that were deaf kids from the MSD a few blocks away.
Anyway. Fast forward to approx the year before it's sale and demolition which would be roughly 1996 give or take a year. There was a older waitress, call it around 55+ due to premature white hair etc from effects of Chemo or other treatments that were pretty brutal in her day. (Cancer which turned out to kill her anyway properly over time) To pretty much the last day of her work she continued to take care of the customers very well.
In that time I was always coming through at all hours of the day and night working out of the Baltimore-Hanover region with I consider to be some really crazy stuff back then. Waitress Mary without fail mentally carried my recipie and custom food requests in addition to normal day or night meal depending on if I am wrapping up a long day or just getting started.
Ive always tried to tip her above and beyond where possible. Then one day she sat at the table and had a meal and a little talk which I would imagine was a fireable offense in front of the boss except for her it really did not matter at all. She was getting ready to go into Hospice and for her that would be that as far as minor things like firing goes. It literally had no meaning to her. Or to the employer who allowed it to happen. You only live once. Spend it wisely.
I was go meet many waitresses in my time, mostly good ones and a few who probably if life ran slightly slower or faster would have a patch of land and a bunch of kids to run around in it. But it's not to be what is not to be. Some of the waitresses though, a few. They were not so good and rightfully received frightful damnation in words applied just so. Usually we don't see those again ever.Flashdrive7 Thanks this. -

Nothing wrong with that. Probably made her day. I’m sure weird dudes do some extremely creepy #### that freaks waitresses out while on the road
Oxbow and Flashdrive7 Thank this.
