I received a pre-hire today, the company runs volvos with I-shifts. not sure what to think, I was hoping to have a manual. what do you think? Flatbed western states.

Of the various auto shift transmissions out there, the I-shift seems to get the highest marks from drivers once you get used to it.

Personally I have never run anything but a manual shift so I really can't comment on the I-shift. I have talked to people that love them and some people that hate them. You will have to keep an open mind if you work for that company and see how you like them. You may get spoiled and not want to run anything else... :)

heres the thing when you get a next job as long as you don't say you drove automatics youll be fine. I know a lot of people will bash me for saying that and say to tell the truth but these companys don't dig for things like that your hardest part will be there road test and if you got rusty driving manual

If its the best offer take it, its a job. Adapting to life on the road and bumping docks on time is more important to start than how many gears you have. But it's also true that you'd learn more from grinding the company gears, for the next job. There's probably a reason most big companies seem to like 10 speeds that has to do with money, but I didn't get this job by being smart.

Many drivers will moan and groan about automatics, but when push comes to shove, bling doesn't pay bills.

I never drove anything close to an automatic until I came to the post office 4 years ago, and I learned on a 5 and 4. The fleet trucks at the post office are 6 speed Allison automatics. These trucks don't even have a clutch. But, for what they are paying me, I wouldn't care if they wanted me to operate a stagecoach.

I have driven 13 speed, 10 speed and I-Shift, I personally prefer 10 or 13, but the I-shift wasn't that bad. I used the "manual" while going down grades and auto the rest of the time. I still prefer manual, but auto can be nice.
