Trucking is an honorable field. No matter what the general population thinks of us.
Part of this being an honorable job is for us to be worthy of that honor. We must be beyond reproach.
No company should ever have any reason to suspect a truck driver would steal their product.

At least that is how it use to be, and how we use to be viewed.
In the last decade trucking has been relegated as a second class job by many. This is a sad state of affairs because it is mostly an idea without merit, and in some ways is perpetrated by the large company's.
As long as we are seen as low life unskilled workers then they feel no remorse at not paying us a good wage.
Sure, some small company's are above that. But the ATA company's are not.

However, even with truckers looked at as second class citizens, we have allot of background checks to pass. It is very rare that anyone with a conviction for stealing is hired as a driver. Would you hand 100,000+++ dollars worth of product to a proven thief?

In my eyes drivers are an honorable group. Many of us have served our country in the armed forces. And we all continue to serve our country as drivers.
No other job in this country is as important to our economy and the lives of our countrymen as driving. Think about it some time.

There plenty of jobs in the trucking industry for men and women with a criminal record. There are even trucking schools within our prison system. My advice is don't ask don't tell, and don't reveal a misdemeanor if asked about a felony.

I understand what you all are saying, however, I have no DUI's or drug issues. And a misdemeanor is not a felony. It's like stealing a pack of gum. It's the least offensive thing you can have. Thanks Big Rig for giving me some hope. By the way, I got 30 days community service. Which has been completed now for some time.

I am wondering if the offense will even show up on my record. I know the misdemeanor will, but will it say what I did? If not, and they want an explanation, can't I just make something up?

I won't look elsewhere until I know for a fact I can't get hired in the trucking field. I'm not that easily deterred. Even if I have to go to Covenant or C.R England. I will make it. I just need to know that someone will give me a chance. Thanks, everyone.

but HIS particular charges will show up, as none were dismissed. had they been dismissed i too would have told him to NOT mention this on any application, then too, BEFORE he gets his permit, he can try and get his record expunged. but as it stands, the conviction he has will stick, and stay with him a number of years. i do not see him getting any trucking related jobs, because every company he applies to will do a background check...dockworker, fueler, mechanics helper, whatever.......job he'd like t get in trucking.

even a job as a security officer, they do background checks.......

he might actually have a better chance at a police academy......!!!!!!!

because if he screws up and ends up in jail...........and all cons do not like cops...........he'd be a dead man........what better job to stay on the straight and narrow...........for life........???

    Do this then....

Call company #1. apply over the phone & tell them that you have that charge. How old it is. And then answer any question they ask about it.

Then call company #2. Just apply for the job & omit the charge. If they ask... Say nope! Your squeeky clean.

About 2 weeks later you will most likely recieve a copy of a full background check from both companies. That thing doesn't omit anything & tells all! It even tells how many times you farted in gym glass when you were 12 years old.

The only option you really have is to call the companies themself. Be upfront & honest. They will appreciate your honesty & possibly may forgive you for what you did. here, your talking to a bunch of truck drivers.... and as petty of a charge it is.... We are going to bust your balls over it because there were 1000 other things you could have done other then skim the till.

guitar, I understand you want to drive. But you asked for advice and you were given some very sound advice by both Redd and Rerun. However you chose to latch onto the statement from someone who simply said what you wanted to hear. You need to do a bit of research on this forum and take a look at whom you should listen to. Redd is a sound driver with experience and a person whose word you can trust. Rerun is new to the forum but his posts so far have been sound, logical and truthful. (even though I don't always agree with him lol)

Please don't latch onto poor advice because it's the easy thing to hear.

I have stated in here in the past but before your time in this forum that I have been arrested 7 times for DWI.I only have been convicted on 1 of those arrests it was the last one and is considered a 1st offense misdemeanor.

I have just recently retired from trucking six weeks ago I delivered my last load ending 35 years on the road. When I was asked have you ever been convicted of a DWI? My answer was always yes sir one time back in 1995 in Austin,TX.then I pop the top on a big can of SHUT UP.

You can shoot yourself out of the saddle of any job by saying more than what is necessary. The trucking industry from day one has been made up of a huge segment of men and women who have a shady past.

Most of the people in this forum have gotten into this industry by using a ATA formula to work for a ATA trucking company that is rigged for a huge turnover due to driver error.I suggest you pursue employment opportunities from where you live and you will find the longer you do anything the easier it will be to stay employed.

First off you never ever want to lie on a job application. If they find out you lied and report it through DAC you're done trucking. Second, we're telling you you'll have problems with the companies for steeling. It doesn't matter what you took or how much all that matters is you'll stoled.

So the best advice here is to check this out before you dump alot of money or sign any contracts. Ask anyone that's had problems after school if the school warned them before they paid any money. That's all what is important here. Don't waste your money for nothing. Because if you do drop a ton of bucks and get through the school like a breeze you just might hit a brick wall and all you'll have is a CDL that's no good and a school that will not return your calls.
