Oh, come on now, he said he was retired, not on welfare. And I didn't see it as bragging, he was just letting me know that you can have a record and still drive, which is what my original question was all about. So let's be fair.
But anyway, I do appreciate your straight-up input, and I am taking it to heart. I went to ripoffreports and learned that you are right, you and some of the others. I searched Driver Solutions and learned that they can send you home during training for whatever reason even before testing, and you will still owe the tuition. Ummm...that's fricking CRAZY. I told you all I wasn't going to be one of those guys everyone laughs at and says "I told you so" to. So I'm thinking I will do it on my own. I already can drive and double clutch and all, I just need to study the manual. I hope I can do it on my own. If not, I will pay for trucking school myself, at least I know I will get my CDL that way, and not be sent home and still have to pay. I can't believe that's legal. Actually, what I really can't believe is that people sit there and sign away their life without knowing what the hell they are signing. Jeeezz... I am sorry, I guess I'm a little too young and inexperienced to be judging others, but, dang, that's just stupid.
I stole from Walmart-misdemeanor-can I still be a trucker?

Truck driving school is basically a IQ test and if you enroll in one you have failed the test. -
And yes, with youth, taking advice is hard but there are a few who walk with ears wide open along with an open mind! He just might get it figured out and come out all right as long as he keeps his nose clean!Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
Personally I think if you really have the guitar chops you should go for that while you are young.Creativity drops off in many with age. That is why many of the old bands from the sixties that are still playing have nothing new to play.John Mayall is a notable exception he is in his seventies turning out new music all the time.

Okay, here's how it works with some companies: You do sign a contract for a loan IF you pass several tests. When I went to Swift you had to have passed all the written tests, gotten your CDL permit, passed your basic maneuvers and ready for the road BEFORE you were obligated to pay the loan back.
Then during the first 13 months you have payments taken from your paycheck and Swift refunds half of that payment to you. Then during the next 13 months Swift refunds the rest of what you paid in so that at the end of 26 months Swift has paid all of the cost of your schooling and training except for about $150 which was for your physical, drug tests and CDL.
I strongly suggest that you begin calling training companies like Swift, Schneider etc and talking to THEIR recruiters. I hope you get what you want and encourage you to try. Just be cautious in what and whom you believe. I strongly recommend you speak on this forum to Redd, notarps, Oldnew, Otherhalf, Working Class Patriot, Injun, Ken and I'll think of some more. They're all drivers, one brand new, some old hands, some independents, some company drivers. I'm not telling you to only believe me. I'm telling you to be careful and look for reputable companies and reputable people for advice.
Best wishes to you hun.Last edited: Aug 16, 2010

I wouldn't make it because I think today's music is stupid. I listen to and play old hippie music from the sixties and seventies. The lyrics are deeper and more meaningful, not just a bunch of crap screaming about whose screwing who and who's got bigger ta-ta's. CCR, Bob Dylan Joan Baez are some of my faves. Folk music is in my blood. But it won't pay the bills, lol.

If you follow that old lady's advice please carry a clean straight razor at all times because you will need it to cut your wrists before you get that school paid for.

I'm not going through any company schools. I'm getting bad vibes from that route. The more I read, the more I realize that if you screw up at all, even if something isn't your fault, like having to take off for a death in the family, or anything, if you screw up in your first year, you will be stuck with major debts for the schooling, you will be fired and your DAC report will be marred. No thanks. I will try to get my CDL on my own and if I can't, I will take it at my local Community College. I will have it in hand before I apply to any companies. I feel really sorry for other newbies who get sucked in. That first year seems to be crucial to your success and I want to make sure I get through it.

Okay. Good luck and best wishes.

What about a 2 year old class "C" misdemeanor? Are you excluded from being hired if it had nothing to do with driving, tickets, drugs, etc?
