Hey gang,
I have been a restaurant manager for 10 years. I REALLY HATE IT, the grease, the humid (hot 110 degree) kitchens, the equipment break downs, the people. I really hate the people, those that work for me and those that come and eat. The staff are the most unreliable, uneducated, lazy, people in any industry.
Don't get me wrong though, not every one in restaurants is that way, most. Think about the last time you went out to eat. I know you guys seem to do a lot of that. At least you guys do not have to deal with drive-thru people.
I like the job just hate the people. The general public is retarded to a level that is scary.
I really think I want to drive trucks!!! just me a radio, and the road. I love driving, well my car. I have always a person taht could drive any thing with wheels. I do not mind traffice, hard work, or late nights.
The problem is I do not what to be away from home much. I have a wife and two kids. soon to be teens. I have enjoyed being home every night, sometimes at 2AM but every night. I have also been making more then 50K a year with great benfits.
What advice would you seasoned drivers have a guy wanting to make a career change. Is it really worth some of the stuff I have read on these thread?
Thanks gang!!
I think I want to be a TRUCK DRIVER!?!?

you won't make that much your first year, maybe not even by your 5th year.......
you won't be home daily, you won't be seeing your kids, or wife much either.

Clap..clap..clap as in standing ovation prodriver. Nicely blunt and to the point...really gotta wonder when some are excited about becoming a driver!?! Not like there was excitement about becoming a professional driver.

The reason I thought of this is that I talk to my delivery drivers every week. They are always nice, freindly, helpful, and in a great mood, even when the warehouse guys mess up their loads out of order or their loads shifted from the last drop off.
I spoke with one last week and he said the company he works for is hioring drivers, if I knew any. I asked about the job our of curiosity. It really got me thinging.
My job is high stress, I like that.
If your not doing something you like, I feel you need to change, to keep your sanity...I feel I am close to losing mine in this business.
I am 34 so going back to school would really suck from a money stand point. Truck driving soulds like something easier to get into than say being stock broker.
Thanks for the insight...you gave me so things to really think about -
OMG you sound like me! We pegged 120 on the line last job I had.
Spend some serious time on here reading. I read every thread in the first three topics. It really helped. Don't get to concerned with the negative stuff. Just think about every dishwasher who called in sick on a Saturday morning with some inane whining. Or the shock on your staffs faces when......"What, I have to work New Years?? this sucks I quit!". You will see the similarities.
Last year was the first time in 15 I was not in a kitchen. I took a job sucking other peoples poo through a hose onto a truck. I absolutely loved it. No staff! I have no staff to worry about........
Took a bit to get used to 13 gears, but alone with no one to baby sit was the greatest thing ever. (even with the poo) -
Seems they were tired of listening to all their salesmen ***** and moan about drivers making more, (more then the majority of sales people).
Out @ 4:30 a.m. and humping groceries out of the trailer for a day and all the whining stopped. -
It ain't pretty but somebody has to do it....
The things you think you might like about driving are the very things I love about the job. Sure, there are blazing idiots to deal with everywhere, regardless of one's profession (or lack thereof), but on a good day the truck will take you into the solitaire zone long enough to make it all worthwhile. There are challenging people, and situations to be dealt with, constantly, but the little bit of individualism and independence help me overcome most of the hassles.
Family life? Forget it. Even the local drivers get little of that. Working 14 and off 10 don't leave much time for a real active family life.
No way under the sun I could do a food service job. I hear your pain. Good luck. -

I am just a truckers wife, but I'll tell you this if you are married and have kids then really really think about it. My hubby is just startting and he left yesterday this is the first time we have not been together in over 5 years and we have a 3years old and a 1 year old and they both wont there daddy. If you are not married and have NO kids then more power to you. But that is from me and like I said I am just a TRUCKERS WIFE

I'm sure you know that it would be very hard, if not impossible, to get a local driving job without truck driving experience. You most likely will need to get an over the road job for at least a year before finding something locally. And that is something your wife has to be in agreement with 100%.
I wouldn't worry about having to deal with the people that we deal with on the road. If you can deal with the customers you have now without killing them, it will be a piece of cake for you. The only two things worse than dealing with stupid people are, dealing with stupid hungry people, and dealing with stupid people's money. You do both now!
Look hard for something that will put you in a position that you will be able to be home often (especially for your kid's sake) and i'll bet you will enjoy the job.
