yeah, but most 4wheelers think of the money they can get from the lawsuits

a driver/delivery person is "supposed" to be nice, friendly, etc, etc. otherwise, some companies will fire that driver (or at least suspend him for a day or two), and it will be classified as an "attitude problem" if the driver is disrepectful towards a customer. here's a tip, when you go talk with a recruiter, be a smart aleck, and mouth off........tell me then if you get hired on.

so.......his place is hiring..........ain't nothing i never heard of before....many companies are 'always hiring".........you need to ask why....did a driver just quit or get fired..........??

good for you, you'll get it in spades driving big rigs.......

better to go "insane" handling a kitchen knife than handling an 80,000 lbs big rig.........either one however, still kills........

its still going to cost you money to attend trucking school........

"Truck driving sounds like something easier to get into"

that's what bothers me..........you "think" its easier. you say you LIKE STRESS...........right.........than a stockbroker is as high stress a job as can be...........why not go for that instead....???

again i say, every blasted time someone wants to change jobs, they "think" trucking is easy.................

I wouldn't encourage you to stay out of the trucking industry but I would advise you to give it alot of thought. When I married my wife we were married less than six months before I "hit the road" and we now have two kids and really that is all they have ever known. They know that Daddy leaves and comes back in a few days. It will probably take you and you family alot of time to get used to you being away for a while but make sure that you keep the lines of communication open.

I wouldn't look at just the cpm either. I recently went to another company with less cpm but they let me get more home time. I worked for my last company almost seven years. I knew it was time for a change when I dreaded even getting into the truck to leave. I guess I will leave the trucking industry when I just don't want to drive anymore.

    Pro...

I relize that drivers are "supposed" to nice, friendly, etc. this is still a cutrmore service business. From sone of the adds I have been reading I would probbly STILL get hired. Seems like they are pretty desprate from drivers, of any type, in my area. I have seen adds with 1500 to 5K sing on bonuses. The hospital I work at has that kind of sing on bouses for nursing like that.

It just seems that drivers, like nurses, and other jobs are hard to hire people due to the uneducated current work force. The kids of today do not want to work for what they earn, they want it handed to them.

I had an employee call me at home at 3AM because she stubbed her toe getting a glass of water and could not come to work at 5AM. Just stupid and lazy people.

Again, I never said being a truck driver was easy.

I know you driver work hard, and have stress, load shifts, wrong direction, waiting for pick-ups, etc.

The biggest reason I think driving is eaier to get into and cheaper, is the fact schoool is only 4 to 6 weeks long vs. 2 to 4 years for others. I considered computers, 2 or 4 years to make 40K my first year. Driving 4 weeks and first year making 40K.

Driving school 2K to 4K vs. 20K to 60K for computers, stock broker, etc.

Is it better to keep my sanity changing jobs...for my family?

Please do not get made at this comment/observation but...You sound like you have about had enough yourself.

    Thanks again

    dotsonwife,

My wife and I have talked about this every night for a few weeks now. She is the greatest woman I have ever meet. She supports me in everything. I really think if I wanted to be a chef in Iraq she would support me fully. She would hate it but she would be extreamly supportive.

My kids asked me yesterday if I was going to be a truck driver? They also have been supportive through the years of me traveling in my job.

We moved to TX a few years back and I had to leave two days after the truck dropped everything off. I felt the #### for doing that to my wife. That was when I relized how strong she really was.

Thanks I will have her read your response

    no..........i'm not "mad"..........far from it.

yes, after putting in 18 years (i'm into my 19th year now) i have had "enough" of the crappola that's out there. i currently work as a yardman, shuttle driver, and night supervisor. 3 titles, one paycheck.........

its just that every stinkin' time someone is dissatisfied with his (or her) current LONG TIME occupation, they think that THEY had enough and want a change, and trucking seems to be the "cure all" to thier situation....

trucking will have MORE inconviences to your life, and your LIFE STYLE, and it ain't easy, whether it be behind the wheel, at the truckstops (when you can find an open space), at the customer, at the DOT scales, in the traffic jams, in the construction zones, in the extreme weather, and everyplace else...........

best of luck to you, but i can "see" by my "observation" you won't be able to handle this stress any better than your current job..........

    Hey gang,

    I may have been mis-leading.

I am lookin at local driving or shuttle runs...NOT OTR driving. I know that OTR will be a lot of time away from home. There seem to be a lot of local or shuttle runs in my area. Runs like 2 - 3 hours away twice a day...that kind of thing.

If I was only looking at OTR I would never do this. My wife and I reilize I may start my new career just to get some experance but I woul donly do that for a year.

I also have to look at the possiblity of a driver manager. Do they have driver managers or trainer. That is what I have been doing for the last 10 years so I would hope I could use those skills in this industry...at some point.

    Any thoughts here gang.

    Thanks

it might be difficult (but not entirely impossible) to get a local run right out of school................BUT................

if there is a more seasoned driver, even with only 1 year driving experience, he might get the job over you. most companies really don't hire for local right away, so going OTR is usually the way to do it to gain the experience needed.

as a driver manager, if you have a college degree, you might get that job. but, to not actually have any driving experience, and then tell your drivers what to do, well, they will be telling you what to do. then, go ahead and fire them...........then try to get replacements right away...........

    as a driver-trainer...........forgedaboudit.............

you NEED to be a driver first........................

    pro,

With the driver manager I would want to be a driver for no less than a year, for experance and because I truly believe that you can not effectly manage people with out truly knowing what they go through and what they REALLY do.

I had not concidered the fact that I might HAVE to start out OTR due to a more seasoned driver taking that spot.

Thanks, your a man of much wisdom and experance.
