I never said that real estate commissions are not negotiable. I guess you missed the part of my post that mentioned lower commission rates. However, the commission rates have been pretty much the standard in my neck of the woods for some time. Just because something is the standard or norm, doesn't necessarily mean that everyone does the same thing. I should have used the word "standard" rather than "fixed." I agree that there are instances where lower commissions could be negotiated or even a flat fee charged for selling property. But, you did get the gist of my point, which is having rates that are disclosed rather than hidden. Any time someone tries to hide something they are usually doing it for a reason. Just as realtors have made a point in their contracts to show the commission rate, broker do everything possible to avoid disclosure. I think that is one reason realtors are perceived as being more trustworthy than freight brokers. Realtors also usually work for the seller, although some will work with a buyer. It is assumed that freight brokers always work for the shipper, but that is necessarily the case. I think the trucking industry primarily sees them as representing themselves and their own interests rather than the shipper.
I think I'll upset some people with this one.
