Another day at the OKC Peterbilt dealer. My ECM has still not been returned from the Cummins dealer. They say the old one is definetly toast. Even once they plug in a new one and all the data is downloaded, that's only the 1st step. There may be other problems yet to be discovered. 3 entire days lost, and looking at possibly more!
My question to everyone is: the company wants me to get into a different truck temporarily, leaving my truck and most of my stuff here. Should I abandon the #### thing or just stay here in case they get it fixed tomorrow? They are paying for my motel and $48 a day for breakdown pay, which is about 25% of what I could be making if I was driving.
I dont want to leave any of my stuff here but I cant afford to lose much more money. What would you do in my shoes?
I think my truck got hit by lightning last nite?

Are you company or owner/op? If I was company I would grab as much of my stuff and maybe get back trucking for a while. Maybe even try to get a different truck all together. They are just not the same usually after they get hit. If you are an owner/op I would stay with the truck. I wouldn't leave my expensive piece of equipment to be worked on without me being readily available.

After I got mine in the shop in Kansas City, They flat said it would be a while. It got hit on the Thursday night (27th of June) and it was in the shop Friday afternoon and they only worked a half day on Sat so it was going to be Monday before they could realy get into it. I call a buddy I know that was coming thru KC Friday night to pick me up got my clothes and I high tailed it home, told them to call if they needed anything. They called Sat.,July 5th and it was ready, so realy mine was in the shop 6 1/2 days. With mine they had to chase alot of problems, got one fixed something elso would or was bad. But its been OK ever sence.

We had a boat get hit by lightning and melted the windshield frame in a few spots and fried the all the electronics, they ended up totalling the boat because the w/s needed to be replaced, as well as every other electronic part in the boat. It was floating out on a bouy in Lake Tahoe at the time.

truckerdave1970: at least you're getting breakdown pay and a hotel room. My company had me in a shop for a week. But I still had to sleep in the truck at night.
JW430: I had to help pull a sailboat out of the water that got struck by lightning. Nailed the aluminum mast and made a mast sized hole in the keel. Luckilly (unluckilly?) it was only sitting in about 4-6 feet of water. But it was blocking the channel, so I was part of a team that had to drag it over to the boat lift and haul it out. Wasn't a big boat, but it was a PITA for 2 days.
As for the ECM, I wonder if it was similar to what an EMP would do to it? -
I have a guy right now that tied his 1-year-old boat up to his pier...backwards...and it sunk in a storm recently on Lake Tahoe, it's probably got $35k-45k in damage, including gelcoat damage to the hull, and will need most all electronics replaced. I found out yesterday that regardless of the work it needs, it is out on the lake and moored on his bouy again with the only work having been done was firing the engine and letting it dry a bit! I thought it was funny...

Good news: I got my truck back! And I'm back to work.
Bad: I dont have Cruise control, engine brake,hi-beams, and my AM/FM is shot. Company wants me to wait till I get thru one of their yards to get a new one.
Good: Sirius radio works and has headphone jacks.
Bad: illegal to wear headphones while driving if you get caught!
Good: got a brand new ECM and for some reason I can go faster than before(alot)
Bad: Qualcomm still works and will rat me out for excess speed!
I wonder how long I can get away with the extra speed cuz I can live with the other issues for awhile! -
As I sit here on my computer reading about this just after getting my computer back up after being struck by lightening. A couple of weeks ago I was on the computer looking for a job when I noticed it getting dark at 6 in the afternoon. I went out to put the dog up before it stated raining. While I was out I heard thunder and thought I better go shut the computer off. It started pouring rain about the time I got in so I took the time to shut the windows because it was blowing in. Well I sat down to shut the computer off and was pushing my 1 year old son away from the computer with one hand while moving the mouse to the shut down menu with the other and BOOM!!!
When I came too I was in the floor, my son was on the other side of the chair screaming, the computer was still on. After I got my son calmed down (Don't know if it got him too or if it was just the boom, flash and daddy flying across the room that had him screaming) I went back to check the computer. The mouse didn't work and the modem was out so I just jerked the plug out of the wall and went to bed. The next day the computer and mouse were fine (I couldn't believe the mouse held enough current to knock me out) but the cable modem was fried. Maybe I'll learn my lesson now as this is the second time for me. First was when I was 17 holding onto the downspout at my parent's house when lightening struck the other end of the house. Or one day I my be on here asking how to fix my CB when lightening hits my truck. Isn't there something like your more likley to hit the lottery than be stuck by lightening? Well where's my millions? Two lightening strikes and counting. -
Dang it 4seasons, it's an emergency! Just yank the plug. (why do older WindowsXP boxes take so long to shut down? All the spyware and viruses need to save and update?)
Truckerdave: Ghetto engineering cruise control, a brick on the gas pedal. (although with the governor gone,,,,,,) -
I drove some 850 miles with a few problems. Now the #### DPF will not regenerate, either manually or automaticly. The truck was slowing losing power. So I am back in the shop! I had to give up a 1000 mile run and spend another nite in some cheap motel! I'm getting tired of this crap! I'm ready to go home. I've lost 6 days of work b/c of this. I cant afford to go home this month or next month. My budget is so #### tight, we can only afford 3 days a month out of the truck. I have got to get another job! This one sucks!
