Ok, so I just hired on with a company after a LONG period of unemployment. The company is called ATR out of Michigan The job is supposed to be daily runs from Fort Wayne into Chicago in a daycab, and I just completed the drug screen the day before yesterday. They hire drivers, then farm them out to companies who will then rent trucks or whatever for you to drive. They called me back this morning supposedly to tell me where to go to orientation, but instead asked me to go on a 3 day run to Paducah and Southern Indiana.
Keep in mind, I haven't even been to orientation for this company yet. I haven't filled out any paper work. No W-4, no insurance, nothing but the application. I took the job BECAUSE I don't want to do over the road driving. If I do this now, I could be setting a precedent. On the other hand, I also want to help out if they're in a pinch. But what kind of company wants to send a guy out before his orientation?
They're waiting on my answer now, so if someone could advise me quick, it would be a great help...
What do you guys think?
I think this is a bad sign, what do you think?

Just don't bend up the truck. Congrats!

Seriously? Keep in mind here I don't want to do OTR. Shouldn't I stand up for myself? If I do this right off the bat then they could try to do this to me all the time and it's not what I hired on for. No one even mentioned doing regional or OTR. They said it was strictly daycabs.

This reminds me of my first load of molten aluminum. The smelter had just come back on line after years of environmental cleanup. Everyone was new. I ran my first load with no training whatsoever. Fortunately, employees of the consignee did the unloading and I began to learn what it was all about. Later, I took job applicants on a student trip. Some of them never came back.

It's not just that. What does this say about a company that would do this? Even the worst trucking company I have been with didn't do this and that was a ragbag unit. Is this kind of thing actually common in the industry?
I mean, it was that easy. "You're drug test came back ok, can you go out for a few days?" -
Have You been driving before or are you just out of school. This could just a long driven test for You. If it was Me I would do it, then when I get back tell Them I only want to do what I was hired for.
