I thought Swift & Prime wanted drivers. Doesn't seem that way.

Thanks. I was never deterred. Some of the reading comprehension-challenged folks here seem to think I was asking to be invited to the recruiter's kids' birthday parties. I was just expressing surprise that there was not even an automatic email confirming receipt of the application followed by radio silence. Some folks clearly, calmly explained that trucking is different and has a total void of professionalism. Ok. I got it. No problem. Moving on. . .

AC120: Yeah, real estate is a tough biz. I love it and will probably return in 8-10 years in some capacity but I'm looking forward to being behind the wheel. I've had several non CDL driving jobs in my life, have keep logbooks, have been asked at the CO/UT border how I drove from Cleveland to Denver in four hours (whoops), have broken down in the middle of the country, driven coast-to-coast many many times. Looking forward to getting out of this city I feel stuck in (Portland, OR) and waking up to drive.

    NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!

CRuSTy is team only. They recruit from homeless shelters. Nobody knows Jack ###### there (except the air freight division, which is very good)

SNI is a good place to start. Really.

If don't want to ride the dog, drive yourself or fly and you will get reimbursed up to the cost of a dog ticket.

But aren't you stuck driving an automatic then? SNI didn't make my list because one of the things I love about getting my CDL and OTR experience is all the options it opens up down the road. I just don't see those options remaining open if I don't know how to drive a 10/18 speed truck, experience or not.

When you said "getting ready to get my CDL" I assumed you were near completion of schooling. Since you're not, you're nobody special to them. I'm sure they have a profile in mind of the kind of person who would be right for the job and you don't seem to fit it. I've seen new recruits that I thought were a bad choice and probably the result of the recruiter needing to fill trucks and hope for the best. You can't judge a book by it's cover, but sometimes you can get an idea by reading a few lines.

I am really not aware of any mega carrier that has an 18 speed transmission. most are of the 10 speed variety. some may indeed be automatics, which I deplore for a newbie to be trained on, only because if you leave a company with only automatics, you may not get a job easily someplace else, when you either fail that company's road test, or be honest and tell them you only learnt on automatics.

I am OLD school, as you may see, I think ALL schools ought to have manuals, then when you get hired on someplace, I still think manuals should be driven for maybe the very least, 6 months to about 1 full year.

Ahha -- Portland. Lots of trucking outfits in and around--local gigs, regional/OTR. You'll find one. We lived in Tualatin for six years--the town's wildlife area was, literally, our backyard. Loved it. Went to Powell's a lot. New Seasons too. Hey, you'll be fine out there. Hard to explain, but trucking's a pain in the neck and it's a blast. Safe trip.

That's fine. I've changed course and now will go to do the schooling on my own, and then look for an employer. Oregon has two community college programs that are reasonably priced, four week programs starting every month.

That's a great idea and I highly recommend that to everyone. Besides being a fun time, you'll have many companies lobbying for your services after completion and it will probably be a variety of trucking jobs besides just OTR.

Another weird one. I got a auto-email and a copy of my application from each of the companies I contacted,

Thanks for the kind words. Portland is a great place, if your household is making $100k+. After 8 years here, I'm ready to leave the cities as they continue to eat themselves alive. I'm originally from NE Pennsylvania, have lived briefly in Minnesota and Idaho. I'll never move east of the northern Rockies again. I love city life here, but so do too many others. Lots of housing demand, limited supply, and the eagerness of newcomers to buy property at any price has driven a lot of folks out.

There is, though, no shortage of local driving jobs here. That's largely due to local longshoremen, who continue crying about their jobs that only pay an average dockworker $147,000 plus benefits worth another $35,000. Poor guys. Lots of freight being moved out of Puget Sound since all the container ships stopped calling on Portland. That means a LOT of local driving jobs.
