I understand why so many bums hang around truck stops now

Had a guy ask me for money the other day... Offered him a ham sandwich instead... Surprisingly he stuck around for it

 

I stayed at the ta in oak Grove last night, this morning I woke up to a guy standing by the exit thumbing for a ride. I did my pretrip, walked inside to get something to drink and eat, come back out and asked him what direction he was headed. Did he's been hitching from Ohio to California as a social experiment on the kindness of travelers to people hitching. I asked him how long it took him to get to oak Grove, said it took him 4 weeks. I asked when the last time he ate, he said this morning but it was coffee and a few donuts. So I gave him my breakfast burrito.

 

When we started school, the teacher made us write our ABC's 1 letter at a time, then all of them. Then they held up the little cards with pictures and 3 letters. DOG. CAT. RAT. CAR. Before we knew it, we had a first grade reading level. "Hell yeah! I can read!"

If you are in pre school with a first grade reading level, they say that you are "advanced." But what if, 10 years later, you still have only that first grade reading level? Are you still advanced?
Many times, people blame their situation on a lack of opportunity. Or the school system. Did they or did they not have access to public school? Did Benjamin Banneker? Well, they may have had some learning disabilities. Like Helen Keller.

Find your way back. Like Robert Downey Jr, one of the greatest acting talents of our time, IMHO. Still breathing? Then you still have opportunity. No pity parties, no sob stories. If Danny Trejo can get out of San Quentin, short and ugly, and become a Hollywood leading man, you can find meaningful work in America if you get off your arse. Six back quiet.

 

That guy in the Y started out at a lower point than I ever did, but I've done pretty much the same thing.
Start out with just enough for a week in a motel and a little food, then go from there.
Hit the pavement and get a job. One with tips helps get to that second and third week more easily.

People that try, and THINK, can do pretty much anything with very little to start with.

 

All I had was a pair of flip flops and a adidas sport wind suit, now I have an extra pair of flip flops to drive in

 

When someone asks you for money they are offering you an opportunity to express the highest form of humanity---compassion. It's you who benefits by your good grace of giving. If they just used you for their pathetic needs then that's their deal and they must live with it. By some, it's called "Kharma". Those who think up excuses for not being compassionate are in no better moral position than the tweaker or lazy leech.

 

Seriously though checkout you community needs

 

I given that panhandler at the stop light so many job offers he doesn't even ask me for money anymore. Someone told me the panhandlers in Tempe, AZ can make $15-$20 hr tax free.

 

Remember the first time you saw Sally Struthers on TV asking for money to feed hungry children? That was what....40 years ago? A bunch of people had a bunch of children that they couldn't afford to feed. So Big Sally tugged at Bleeder heart strings and people sent money and Sally got fat. Michael Jackson did that We are The World Stuff and they sent billions. What happened to those children? Well, they grew up and had children that they couldn't afford to feed. Then they had a racial war, ethnic cleansing, Hutu vs Tutsi tribes, ethnic cleansing, AIDS afflicting 25%of the population. And they're still popping kids out. What on earth should we do...send more money?
