I do a load or 2 a month from Purina in Denver to North OKC. As a result, I'm often taking my 10 at the J on 35 near 44. The last 3 times at about 9-10pm I've had some fat bass hole with a fat kid knock on my door asking for money, each time I told them to f*** off. My job is to provide for my wife and I, your job is to provide for you and your unfortunate offspring. If your kid looks dirty and hungry, I might buy him a meal inside when I go in for a shower. However, if your kid looks like he could feed a tribe in the Amazon Flunk you.

...and here I thought it was because it was the one place they could feel clean, well dressed, and respectable by comparison.

Sad truth is they actually present themselves better than the typical truck driver.

Well, you can't expect him to make very good time, in that wheel chair. I flatly don't give cash to individuals. I've been known to put gas in vehicles, I've given food. But no cash.
I pulled into the Vegas Hook at O dark thirty one morning, and watched a black fella dumpster diving. I had stopped in the driveway, as nobody was behind me. He came up out of one dumpster, empty handed, went to the second dumpster. I called out to him something like "what the hell you doing!"
He started crying and saying how hungry he was. I called him over to the truck, and gave him what little food I had left. It wasn't much, just some Slim Jims and crackers. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that this man was hungry! He accepted the food with gratitude.
Don't know why, but I still think of him now and then, and wonder what his story was, and what happened to him. He certainly did not look like your standard dumpster diver.

It's so darn easy to think that the money is always going to keep flowing in. Then when you hit hard times, you either are kicking yourself in the back side, or looking at your situation with the satisfaction of knowing you have some cushion there.

spider, sounds like guys I know from the oil fields, only I know they will do it again. I was lucky, my wife is frugal and we put back when we can. That being said, I'm ready for the Golden days again.
