psanderson you may have more inside info-just curious what western express out of nashville what rating do they have?rumor was they bought smx as a move to improve rating in case d.o.t shut them down so run through smx authority but that sounds now like a wild rumor?when d.o.t goes into a company to check logs and such do they also check if liscense is valid-not suspended or warrant?after the western chase may be worth doing at western and maybe smx since together?

I worked for SMX for 2years (05-07) . I can only tell you about my experience and what other SMX drivers who worked thier and a couple who still do have to say.

    Alot of NYC runs...
they reimburse you for your tolls, lumpers, etc. "And you have alot of this happening 2-3 aweek"...
No layover pay-NONE! No detention pay-NONE!...
Expect to be at a shipper for 6-8hrs b4 getting loaded "No slepping aloud" If you miss you call to dock your bumped to the end of the wiating list. this happens twice a week...
    forced dispatched..."Whatelse is new!"
Driver assist pays for only one delivery and you can have up to 6 stops with driver assists on the BOL's...

On a scale of 1-10 I give them a 4... Work somewhere else!

Your average pay after taxes fluctuates-1week$850-1100. the next $175-300 "This is because of the prementioned cash advances...

it would be nice to have a choice of loads and on some days if you're in iowa you may get that.in 12 years have never been to nyc and only rarely been at a shippper/receiver that long.only good thing with western purchase is ez pass.but with what you said really tells us how important a good dispatcher is

for starters, like you have seen here, smx was bought by western express out of nashville, tn. I work for them now and have been here a couple weeks. It has been a rough start but what company doesn't have a rough start. And remember, I am not being positive because I 'love' my job. I am simply neutral in the matter because quite frankly, all truck driving jobs quite suck right now because of the economy. Companies either have too much frieght and run their drivers to death, or they have too many drivers and freight wears thin. The orientation for 3 days was very disfunctional. I think it is because it is unpaid, and the buy out happened only 2-3 weeks ago. so growing pains may be the best word by another poster. Every one has their own opinions and you know how upset drivers talk. I have heard they are 160 million in the whole, know for a fact that there is a business consultant for Knight transportation working for western express, and heard that Knight trans funded the rest of the buy out. Instead of getting a truck right out of orientation, they sent me and 4 other guys in a rental car toward Salt lake city, Ut to recover a truck. Once I got back to shop in ok city, found another driver who had recovered a truck. So obviously guys who are quitting are not returning trucks to the yard. The good thing though is that they do have miles to give drivers, and since the buy-out have more terminals across the nation. Before I go on anymore, if you wanna chat with the best recruiter (who also will clear everything up before you go besides physical and drug screen) I will put her name and number at end of this...But truthfully, 12 guys came in with us and only 4 of us made it thru. if your neck is bigger than 17 and 3quarter inches, dont bother, they will send you home making you disprove sleep apnea. blood pressure was another killer for many of these guys. Recruiter is Jean or Jill, both are fantastic. they hired me as flatbed driver out of texas with only 6 months verifiable from swift in 09 and was discharged. Number is 800-255-5562 xt 203. Good luck man

There is a smx terminal here in homedale idaho right on highway 95. i would guess its affilliated with the rest of smx and western. A friend of mine warned me about them but i know they do flatbed and dryvan. it has been a thought to talk to them.

SMX, Formerly HQed in Fort Dodge, IA. did both flats and vans. The company has been fully integrated into Western express as of 01/01/10.

SMX did not have a terminal in Homedale, ID.

I have seen a company running in Idaho that also uses SMX on their trucks. I think it may be a smaller regional company, and that may be their terminal.
This would not be the one out of Fort Dodge, IA.

I worked for SMX for a spell cant say it was a good time. Before I started orientation I informed them of a prior obligation I had with the US Army reserves. I began with them getting through orientation, getting the truck and out for a week or so. Then came the delivery on thursday night about 5pm in KC, sit till friday about 5pm on a drill weekend (drill weekend) then get a dispatch to load south of St. Louis. Dickspatcher tells me go load and take it to DSM yard then run to Ft. Dodge then back south to drill. Hmm i know any employer is "supposed" to grant you time for that seeing that they knew in advance. Other than that the orientation stunk they were simple minded no question got a good answer. the load securement class was not thee best. I worked for Decker out of ft. dodge they were great. as for working for SMX western not again. pay seemed a lot lower than usual too. to own his each i guess.
