Ok, Im a 24 year old kid looking to get into the OTR trucking field. And I want to hear from everyone on this.
Ive been hopping from one job idea to another. I wanted to be an electration...$30,000 schooling down the drain. I thought I wanted to be a chef. Ive been cooking for years an I dont wanna blow another $40,000 on something I dont think Ill be happy with in a few years.
Ive been researching for a few weeks now and trucking looks like my kinda field. An I know their are ups and downs of every job but Ive been seeing more pros than cons in this industry.
My brother in law is a local truck driver. Hes home every night, sees his child grow up. And makes a very god wage. Now I dont have kids nor want kids and I love to drive, and I mean that. Love to drive.
Sorry this is so long but I wanna get it all out there. Ive had a few tickets and suspensions in the past. Will that effect my chances? I have to wear glasses to see, will that effect my chances at all? And I have tattoos. Sleeves, and on my hands. Will that just screw me over?
Any and all information will be appricated. I would like to hear from Newbies to 30 year vets, wifes, family of truckers...everyone. Thanks guys...an ladies. sorry to bore ya with this long post.
I want EVERYONE'S opinion.

You'll love this job !!!!
-
seriously, you'd be making MORE money as an electrician and home EVERYDAY......
beyond that, the tats, eyeglasses, will not be a problem....
however, "love to drive" a car, motorcycle, mini van, SUV, ain't NOTHING like driving a big rig....
i wish you well, but i hope you reconsider your career path much better than trucking...
because the way i am "reading" your posting, you are "wishy-washy" in your choices of occupations/careers.....you can't seem to be "satisfied" with any decision you make...Last edited: Feb 9, 2011
U4EA, EZ Money and PainNdaNeck Thank this. -
That's the big one right there.... -
I think it depends on the suspension. I got into a fender bender in a parking lot and forgot to switch my payment card on insurance so got suspended for no insurance. Not a problem with employment. However I am ticket free otherwise.
Personally I would say I have gone from different careers too but once I got behind the truck wheel I was at home. So to each his own. I would however apply to a truck school and see if they will even take you with that abstract of yours. Most of the reputable ones want to see an abstract before they take your money.PainNdaNeck Thanks this. -
Oh hell, why not give it a try. I am serious here. It sounds like you are young and single, and probably do not have a lot of financial burdens right now. You will never be in a better position to try something new out.
I agree with what everyone else has posted here so far, so keep their answers in mind as well. But the fact is, that if you really want to do this, and you don't actually do it, you may find a few years from now, that you have family responsibility that keep you from doing it.
Just my opinion, for whatever it is worth.
Also, keep in mind that there is much more to this job than just driving.123456 Thanks this. -
I say go for it. Your tickets/suspentions are the biggest factor holding you back, depending on how recent they are. Like Big Don said, now is a better chance than ever....if you end up not liking it, well then you know what situations await you when you get out of the seat.
I would rather know first hand its not for me than just think I might love it for the rest of my life. -
I don't experience it often, and wintertime I have long sleeve shirts on, anyway. Summertime, I sport my art. There are many truckers that have great work out here. You should just be prepared to be rejected for ink and no other reason. Then you just move on to the next opportunity. -
Become a truck driver......................
the electrical experience will come in handy.
Plus, you're going to learn cooking, in your truck.
Life will be grand !!!!!!PainNdaNeck Thanks this. -
Be the electrician. You're already trained for it. How can you be sure you won't change your mind 6 monts from now, when you have to stay out 2 weeks or more? Besides, your driving record is less than stellar, which might create a problem.
Many employers frown on tat's also.PainNdaNeck Thanks this.
