Ah, the infamous "axle hop". Trouble was, most trucks I drove struggled to get the speed limit, and guess where the "shake" usually was?

it was Piggott Arkansas, on 62 east of town where it curves 90 degrees north. it was a 35mph curve he went about 65mph. half load of microwaves, and 20K lbs worth of transformers on the back half. the truck actually made it thru the curve, but the transformers had started coming thru the side of the trailer, and the trailer was sliding off the road, just as he thought he made it the truck did a barrel roll into the ditch.

he'll find the pics. that 2 guys walked away from the truck is amazing.

My new Eagle in 1977.Notice tube tires, lock ring wheels.10.00- 22's.Same height, diameter as 11.24.5's.Lots of us still liked bias tires, just felt better the way the truck handled.Remember the first time I drove a semi with radials, thought I was going to roll off the road in the curves, felt squishy.
Tubeless tires? That single handled was one of the greatest improvements and timesavers in modern trucking.Eventually changed that Eagle over to all aluminum tubless 11r24.5's.

Hey Doug, in the late 70's, I drove for a company that had a truck exactly like that. They had 2, one like yours, and the other white and yellow. 350 Cummins ( big stuff at the time) and 13's, on Reyco. Next to a Pete or KW, this was about as nice as it got. They rode rough, and never liked that clutch. That's true about radials. I come from a time, when they were all bias ply. When radials came in, they did feel squishy, but the advantages in rain or snow, far outweighed the squishy.

That Eagle was a NTC 350 Cummins small cam,RTO12513,and had IH version of a Reyco, and IH's crappy rears, rode bad when loaded heavy.Eventually stretched it from a 200" to a 235"wb,and put a Newway airide cutoff with SQHD's out of a wrecked Ford CL9000.Rode like a Caddy then, light or heavy.
