What about bad companies I should not join when starting out. I don't mind paying my dues, I just don't wanna get into something horrible for 6 months to 18 months at first.
I want to be a truck driver

Is it better to get classes from a community college or a private school? I heard that I should make sure it is at least 160 hours so I get the proper training. Does anyone use back up cameras? There are wireless ones that have a magnet and attach to the back of the trucks. Wouldn't that be helpful to put on the back of the truck all the time or only when backing up? Or what about for the blind side also?

I hate to break it to ya, buddy, but your post convinced me in about 5 seconds that you are certainly NOT the type of person to get a CDL and drive professionally. Your ideas of what a commercial driver is seem to be based solely on some TV fantasy, and not based on reality. When the cold, hard reality of what trucking actually is finally hits you in the face, you'll probably be on the first flight back to LA-LA land to rejoin the fantasy mill of motion picture production. You really oughtta stay where you are; we already have enough 'unsuitables' driving already...

New drivers have to come from somewhere. Are green-horns a PITA? Absolutely they are but somebody helped us and answered our questions way back when we were green-horns.
It's our turn to help now.austinmike, FullMetalJacket, lual and 3 others Thank this. -
This is the second time you do this. I already told you to go away. lol
by the way someone just said that they have seen back up cameras in some trucks with some companies in another post of mine...so you obviously don't even know what you're talking about. Lol. -
I would not tell someone they can't do the job of truck driving. There is not a lot public information like most jobs.
You can work 14 hours a day from the time you start for the day. If you get up at 6 am and eat and use bathroom or get shower at truck stop. You might start your driving day at 7:30am you can work 14 hours till 9:30pm. In that 14 hour work day you can drive 11 hours or load and unload the trailer or fuel the truck. You would stop to eat and use bathroom. You could take shower at truck stop in middle of day but remember you cannot stop the 14 hour clock. So taking a shower in middle of day could mean less time to drive to get them miles in for the day.
After driving 11 hours or 14 hour limit you have to take 10 hours off. If you sleep 8 hours that leaves you 2 hours to eat and shower or watch TV or YouTube or get on this website. 10 hours off goes by fast I find. Some loads will have extra time so you could have load over weekend or holiday.
You can work 70 hours a week so if you worked 5.5 days you you would be getting close to 70 hour limit. If you park and for 34 hours you reset your driving time. I worked for company that ran me Monday-Saturday and by Saturday even I was close to 70 hour limits. So by Saturday at 8 pm I as parked at truck stop and sat 34 hours till 6am Monday I could start driving again.Last edited: Nov 18, 2023
