Is trucking really THAT bad? I am currently a 16 year old male looking to go into the trucking industry for a career. I plan on going to college, studying business management, learning as much as i can about trading stocks and investing, and am basically looking to start my own trucking company one day and make the big bucks. After studying business and what not in college, I plan on doing OTR trucking or local trucking for a few years, than once I rise in the ranks a bit, I want to own my own truck and start my own business. Is trucking really as bad as people make it out to be? I have considered going to college, getting into medical school and becoming a surgeon, have considered being a cop, have considered joining the military, being an airline pilot, and a few other professions but trucking has been the career choice that really sticks with me the most. I'm sure I could start up and run a trucking business successfully in the future, so I don't really see a problem. I'm not planning on marrying or having kids at an early age or anything. I plan on doing that when I'm making enough money to support my wife and kids. If I do get married, I want it to be with a lovely lady who loves my career choice and wouldn't mind team trucking with me. What do you think of all of this? Should I consider looking more into trucking and starting a business, or choose a completely different career such as being a doctor or something?

Thank you for your time. --Lucidd

If you plan on having a family and want to be there when your children speak their first words, take their first steps, lose their first tooth, for their first day of school, etc, etc, etc, stay as far from trucking as you can. You will be working or sleeping. And you will miss a lot.

Now I am unsure on what to do. I would love to truck and have a sense of freedom and adventure, but i would also like to become successful in what I'm doing and be able to, at some point after having a successful company, sit back and let the money come to me, so to speak.
What really draws me towards trucking is the fact that I'll be constantly on the move, seeing new things every day, meeting new people. And during my off time, I'd take out a bike or motorcycle and go explore the town a bit. I would be a surgeon, but i don't want to feel confined to any one particular location for long periods of time. Such as, working in the same state every single day for years. I want to get out there, see the world, and make money at the same time.

See the world? The roads are stripped pretty much the same in Texas as they are in Maine. Warehouses look pretty darn similar too.

That's pretty much all you're going to see besides traffic.

What's your opinion on trucking? Do you regret it?

there is nothing wrong with wanting to be a trucker, don't let all the negativity you see here let you down. I wanted to be a trucker when I was your age, and it worked out fine for me. I am not rich, but I love what I do and I work for a great company. I too considered a handful of other careers and but my mind kept coming back to this one. All the negative nancies on here will tell you you are crazy and you should do something else, you will never make it, etc. most likely those are people who either tried what you want to do and failed, or they just work for bad companies and they are so unhappy, so they want to drag everyone else down with them. with the mega carriers running the industry, there is no doubt that starting your own company is difficult and very risky. This is no fairy tale world, you will either sink or swim. but with the right amount of knowledge and determination, there is no reason you can't be a success. You just have to start small and work your way up.

Nope. It's a decent living. But I waited til my children were grown. Which also coincided with divorcing my ex. If I had stayed married, I probably would have kept with what I was doing. Some folks can make the family thing work while on the road.

Thanks everyone :) I will keep an open mind about going into trucking in the future. I am currently learning as much as i can, and am also watching lots of trucking vlogs such as Trucker Josh on Youtube. Trucking seems really fun to be honest. But then again, I have always been the type of kid who wanted an RV and wanted to always be on the move and what not, rather than living in some boring apartment paying rent. I love this lifestyle. I considered getting myself an RV in the future for quite a long time, but realized how hard it would be to find a job since i wouldn't have a permanent address and what not. I figured, why not be a trucker. It seems to be sort of the same lifestyle, and I'll get paid while doing it so i wouldn't have to worry about what job ill be working, one after the other.
I'm the type of person who would rather live in a vehicle and experience something new every day rather than sitting in the same boring state, knowing exactly what tomorrow brings me.

Do you think i have the right mindset for becoming a trucker? I often hear people complaining about the fact that trucking is not what they expected, so they end up getting out of it soon after. I don't want to be that person lol

The key to any goal is to simply want it bad enough. If you want it and pursue it, you will get it. Trucking, like any profession is made up of lots of small events. Each one is important. If you pay attention to the small things bigger things will happen. If you decide to follow your desire start developing good safe habits and don't veer away from them. Never short cut safety. Trucks can do a lot of damage. Every driver hopes the other drivers are paying attention enough to do the right thing. You might want to watch some videos on youtube that show accidents. There is one on there showing a rig going over the side of the "Donner Pass." A driver and his trainer were killed because they were going too fast and could not remain in control. RV living is great. Been doing it for two years now.
