Kix is you want to do, it then do it. Most of the large companies you see will run you all over the country. (expect Mexico). This job is what YOU make of it. You will see MANY posts one this website from bitter drivers who all they do is complain about everything, so take what they have with a grain of salt. (as well as the ones who are all sunshine and roses).

Kix... if money is no problem then I would consider going to a good private school. The company paid training is not always the best route. I know for me I was able to afford to go to a private school and I am glad because that opened up a lot of options and opportunity for me that going with a company paid school would not of.

However, I gotta tell you, you are young and may not realize what you are giving up by giving up your opportunity to get the farm... I know a few farmers who are also truckers... In fact a good friend of mine inherited his family farm... Farming was not his passion, and he actually lives in the city, while another family farms his land... He makes a good income from that and that helped him get started in trucking where he now has a small fleet...

I am a big fan of traveling... I took a lot of road trips by car and motorcyle and traveled most of the country that way before getting into trucking... I love driving a truck... but it isn't exactly traveling the country... It isn't like you get to really experience the Grand Canyon, the Tettons, the bad lands and all that I got to on my road trips.... Canoe the Boundry waters... white water rafting... rock climbing... I glad I got to all that... while I was young... Now at 46, trucking is good, I am more settled, less retless and can be okay with being hung up waiting for a load at a truck stop.
There are things I miss when I am trucking... going to all the concerts, live sports events... like going to a Vikings game... Had tickets to Farvs first home game.. only wasn't able to get there in time... my brother enjoyed the game however... driving though the mountains but not being able to stop and just enjoy it like I could in my car or on my motorcycle...

You have money, you have options... why not just take a road trip and think it through...

Son you don't want to do trucking. You can't stand farming and you want a job that has a lot of the same stuff? What you need to do is join the military. Join the Army or Navy, See new things travel to new lands, Meet new people and learn how to kill them. Now this is a "Adventure" you can do for 4 yrs or so. Trucking is a life style not an "Adventure". It takes hard work and lots of repetitive stuff.

Lemme tell ya, if you don't like farmin' then you #### sure won't like drivin'. I like both. I've done my time not so much as farming but a Kabota AC/heated cab with a 20' JD batwing. Loved it and made good money at it. Problem was when the winter month's kicked in I was out of work for the time being. I've seen everythign as well so I could really careless about that. I just love the fact of trucking itself.
Like Kabar said, it's a life style, not an adventure. Lot's of hard work and repetitive stuff but no routine what so ever. You can have to get up and start working at any given time of the day or night year round. It's dangerous too. Responsibility is the biggest issue. Something to keep in mind is that we are fedarlly ruled and rugulated and the law's are much different than driving a car. In any case you are involved in a major accident and someone is killed, you automatically go to jail unless you are proven not at fault but these day's to everyone it's alway's the truck driver's fault. Just some more thing's to think about.

Kix, its guys like you that are the reason that we are losing farms and farm ground to houses. The kids dont want the farms, they want the big city life. But when the kids all are gone so are the farms. When that happens where are we going to get our food, our milk, cotton for clothes? We are going to be in one big world of hurt when the farms are gone and theres nothing but houses where farms once were. thanks for bailing out on us kix.

Join the Navy, you are ripe for the picking, and it sounds like you will have no problem finding the trouble your headed for. Trucking is not fun & games. It is serious business.

I don't think he deserves this crap. He is free to make his choices. And frankly it is not his responsibility to continue his dads dream, but to follow his own. I would just caution him to make sure he id making informed decisions. But trucking right is just a good place to lose money.
